Ralph Lauren's no legend. When I think "FASHION LEGEND!!!!" I think of Balenciaga or Vionnet...not the maker of ubiquitous polo shirts.

Thus becometh a legend!!!!!!

Ralph Lauren is possibly the most known designer next to Chanel. That's about it, what has he done though? Besides the polo? Did he revolutionize fashion somehow or? Am I missing something?

i love ralph lauren.

"Before the FUBU age, Bronx-born designer Ralph Lifschitz (aka Ralph Lauren) was hip-hop’s premier urban outfitter. The Polo movement wasn’t rooted in materialism; instead, hood kids were delivering a simple message: We deserve to rock the same fly gear that yuppie scumbags take for granted."

I mean yeah he was no Balenciaga, he didn't do much to revolutionize fashion, but to most of America you mention a fashion designer, and I bet that at least 75% will mention him.

If that were phrased as a question, I'd say cashmere polos, silk-blend polos, cotton voile polos, et al., just to reiterate.

THE CFDA AWARDS 2007: TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT
spacer.gif
THE top names in American fashion will be climbing into limousines all over New York this evening and making their way to The New York Public Library, to find out who has won what at the glittering Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, 2007. Oscar de la Renta, Proenza Schouler's Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough and Marc Jacobs are all in the running for the hotly-contested Womenswear Designer of the Year Award. Contenders for the Menswear Designer of the Year Award - Duckie Brown's Steven Cox and Daniel Silver, Ralph Lauren and Italo Zuchelli for Calvin Klein - are equally strong contenders. Sponsored by Swarovski and now in their 25th year, the CFDA Awards are sure to be suitably dazzling and star-filled. Philip Lim, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte and Thakoon Panichgul are the nominees for the Swarovski Award for Womenswear, whilst Michael Bastian, Tim Hamilton and Rag & Bone's David Neville and Marcus Wainwright are up for the menswear equivalent. "We're thrilled that this year's nominees and honorees reflect the strength and vivacity of the American fashion industry," said CFDA executive director, Steven Kolb. Ralph Lauren will be presented with the first ever American Fashion Legend Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award will be renamed in honour of four-times CFDA Award winner Geoffrey Beene. Click back tomorrow to see the red carpet pictures from the event and to find out who won what. (June 4 2007, AM)

*what the heck is the swarovski award......

an award for using the most chrystals in one collections???...
.........

but seriously- swarovski has been incredible in recent years in their support for the fashion industry and young designers..
they sponsor so many shows...where do they get all this money from?

Thakoon will be a very nice choice.
Philip Lim has been copying so much and of course he got lots of commercial success. But I don't think that should be recognized or promoted. Thakoon, on the other hand, is way more original but not enjoying as much success (commercially) so I'd love to see more exposure.

I feel the same way. I hope Thakoon wins.

I'm rooting for Italo Zuccheli, he is amazing in my opinion, and Proenza Schouler. I'm not a fan of their recent collection but I'm all about recongition of young talent. Marc doesn't need it and De La Renta hasn't been THAT exciting. The rest of the categories are a moot point to me.

Interested to see Cardin get some attention. His recent foray into menswear was tragic but you can't deny the amazing things made for both men and women in his younger days.

I'm thinking they get it from L.A. Swarvoski crystals on EVERYTHING were all the rage there a year or so ago.:innocent:

CFDA Winners
NEW YORK – The CFDA's President Diane von Furstenberg was determined to kick off the Council's 2007 Fashion Awards on time this year. And she kept things moving despite a few tardy hiccups: Oprah Winfrey, Uma Thurman and Ellen Barkin, who was the evening's hostess.

While von Furstenberg ushered people in with a clucky "Come on, everybody. We have to start," the photographers were still waiting for the marquee names to arrive at the New York Public Library.

When Winfrey finally showed up on the library's steps, Ralph Lauren came down to greet her. "There's Ralph!" she exclaimed with open arms. There's no reason she should have been late, though, especially since, she said, "Ralph's people came and did everything." Lauren certainly had every reason to be in good spirits. In addition to receiving the American Legend Award from Winfrey, he picked up this year's Menswear Designer of Year Award.

As the evening unfolded, Oscar de la Renta tied with Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez for the Womenswear Designer of the Year. Derek Lam snagged the Accessory Designer of the Year award. Robert Lee Morris was honored with the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award, while Patrick Demarchelier received the Eleanor Lambert Award, and Robin Givhan, the fashion editor of The Washington Post, took home the Eugenia Sheppard Award. This year's International Award went to Pierre Cardin, and Bono was given a board of directors special tribute. The Swarovski Award for emerging talent went to Phillip Lim in Womenswear, David Neville and Marcus Wainwright for Rag and Bone in Menswear, and Jessie Randall for Loeffler Randall in accessories.

wow...a tie for womenswear designer of the year...
i had a feeling proenza schouler was going to win...

proenza did the best collection of their short careers imo...
but oscar?...
really?...

...

*so happy for robert lee morris though...
i'm a diehard fan...

i'm really happy for robin givhan  for too long,i feel she's been utterly the most underappreciated fashion writer in american media.....it's about time she recieved something for quality writing.

on the subject of Swarovski:they're a company steeped with history and a great legacy for quality crystals and gemstones....the company has been part of the fashion world for many, many decades(if not longer) so it's only fitting. you may not know, swarovski is the first company anybody heads to when a designer needs stones.

as far as ralph.....i think the term legend should only be applied to somebody who actually designs and revolutionises, not recycle tireless american looks constantly.

philip lim won!! glad to hear this. and also for loeffler randall - her accessories collection is really amazing, great to see this recognized.

Philip lim over Thakoon?
a tie for womenswear designer of the year?

what a bunch of crap, these are some of the reasons why i hate this area of the business........
how can you have a tie for designer(s?) of the year?
the fact that it is expressed in singular terms (designer, not designers!) means there should never be a tie......... that like having a tie (between Gore and Bush) for president of the US.
Or having a tie between (Cleveland ans San-Antonio)for NBA Champions.......

a new fashion Oximoron?

Softie,
regarding post #29
the award was originally the Perry Ellis award for new fashion talent..almost everyone who won it ended up being a fashion casuality........beginning with David Cordona......and ending with Adrover(?).
when Swarovski became a sponsor they Changed the name in hopes that the Kiss of Doom would go away with the old name

re swarovski
- but where are they getting all this money that they keep giving away?...

the only people i see using crystals on their collections are the young designers whose shows they are sponsoring...and they are obviously donating the crystals that the designers use in exchange for sponsorship...

i just had no idea there was so much money to be made in rhinestones!!!
...

I read an article a while back where they said that they had only lately entered into the clothing market, and my impression is they use it more for promotional purposes than for profit.
I cant remember the exact details of the article (i'll try to find it ) but it seems they make thier money from a lot of other Crystal products (chandeliers, figurines etc)
they also make a lot of Optical instruments (telescopes, binoculars etc, so they are not poor:smile:p?)
