i thought this would be a really fun lil' competition to watch and analyze since we are a big group of handbag lovers and addicts. Im really curious to see how much current "it" bag inspires these designs or if there is some originality amongst the entries. I think it would also be nice to discuss the practicality of the designs, their appeal, their possible referrances to currrent popular "it" bags, as well as how competitions like this can either be exploitational or actually be a boost in a handbag designers career. I really think it's going to be fun seeing the weeks entries and following this all the way to the end of the competition, and seeing the final product.

Neat thread, Jun! I've been doing sketches of bags to make myself, and it's fantastic to see how others' sketches and ideas too.

Will you enter?

Oh Jun, I saw this competition and i thought of you! Why don't you enter???

i'm sad because it's only for US residents. I did a sketch regardless :P!

The only one I see that has actual potential so far is the last one.
The fact that she's a good Illustrator sketcher does indeed help, though.

i agree with you luna. But i cant help think of LANVIN bags and the Longchamp rodeo bags it is so similar to. It's very hard sitting down and doing and original design without having influences from bags already on the market or bags you are a fan of.

does anyone else have that problem? and also, do you think that there are similar things in the most popular bags that make them popular? like a golden rule of handbags as far as shap/mesurements/etc?

well, week two is up. i'll have to post later, because i dont have the time to put up all the new designs. It seems from site comments over on glam.com, that most people are pretty dissapointed with the designs, the way the competition was organized and the time frame given to submit designs. interesting....:shifty:

these bags are too busy and not practical it seems.

the last one would be nice minus the design

horrid. sorry.

the blue one looks exactly like a Dior street chic bag :ninja:

they're frankenbags. recombinant designer bags! I dont see anything interesting or original. no it bags thats for sure.

i submitted an entry, but i'm not exactly sure how the whole thing works. it seems they choose 8 of the best and then put those 8 up for voting. the deadline for mailed entries and emailed entries was different and a bit vague and i thought that was rather frustrating for people who would like the enter.

so far i dont see much originality either. you can pick out the ones who are in fashion design school right now, and who their influences are. i see some marc by marc jacobs and lanvin/longchamp influence in the first batch of entries; while the second batch has balenciaga, some more lanvin, birkin, vogue acessories patterns 101 and rebecca minkoff/gryson as well....im not really impressed and was really expecting to have some fun seeing the designs:(

perhaps i'll post mine, perhaps not. i wish i would now somehow if they received it okay....

^I hope your entry got through okay..it'll be nice to see an entry from someone on TFS.

As for all the entries thus far, I'm sorry but nothing seems inspiring, I wouldn't vote for any of the entries so far. This may seem harsh but nothing really grabs me.....

One more thing..please credit all the images for the entries that were posted..thanks.

Ugh... That brass knuckles bag has been done.. and it's been done better, I'm afraid.

I'm not very enthused about these. I was going to sketch up some stuff and revamp some of my old stuff to submit, but after seeing some of these, I dunno, maybe I'll wait until they have another contest like this and it's much more organized.

/\ yah, so far i agree with you. im trying to figure out if the people at glam crop your images. that blush bag has this random arrow on the right side that looks like part of some specs or something.....

im always surpirsed at how unorganized these things are and how they are put together and how the PR people really dont do a darn thing....
