Mastermind S/S 2025 : Kaia Gerber by Craig McDean

Love Kaia, but I hate it all here.
The abs are weird with this styling (does it make sense?)

This shoot is one of the stronger ones coming out of this rag in a long time. It’s basic done well: Very much Craig’s shoots for Fabien’s Arena Homme Plus mid-2000s days. And Kaia is proving to be a far superior model than her mum ever was— and that’s unheard of coming from these nepobabies. (Let’s see if she’ll steer clear of her mum’s cheapness: Failed blockbuster action star wannabe; reality show hosting; fast-food endorsements; and hawking consumer-brand mattress and shampoo infomercials.)

I disagree. During her heyday, Cindy Crawford was a knockout and a great model. Her images with all the iconic photographers during that time are proof. I do not feel the same about Kaia or her work. This fashion editorial is well executed but it is not exciting.

Completely disagree too.
Kaia with her blank stare and teenager body is nowhere near the iconic presence of Cindy in the 80s and 90s. Of course she was more one-note and commercial, but she was a force of nature. Her work with Herb Ritts really stands out.

I feel like all people ever look at here is the model, which is ofc nothing bad, just boring. The model brings the gays to the yard, sure, but keep in mind a magazine like this is created by a stylist. It's not rooted in a certain idea of beauty that's ubiquitous in pop culture. Throughout her career MAS has been someone who's heavily invested in being experimental/ creating a solid alternative for fashion. I think it's more productive to consume the mag through this lens.
I've never seen Kaia styled this way before, it's ok to slightly miss the mark if they're trying out sth new. Just to provide contrast:

Both are full MJ (except the shoes on the right) The left is Vogue December '24 styled by Grace, with the bouffant and 50's throwback vibe. MAS approach is much more contemporary imo, making Marc's heavy volume wearable and sporty.

Kaia looks just like a pretty model here as well, not CINDY's DAUGHTER, which I appreciate. Avoid clichés at all costs.
