^I guess they're talking about Arlenis high fashion wise , if we were going by money doutzen/julia/hilary/valentina should still be on the list but they ain't because its more to do with highfashion.

To me if a model can't translate editorials into campaigns then I don't see why she should be given a top ranking, which in fairness to MDC they don't. I think that Arlenis is an interesting case - basically she got a big cosmetics contract fairly early in her career and like most models do when they land the big one, she got out of the rat race of "gotta walk 50+ shows and gotta get in front of the camera of major and minor photographer on the planet." To be sure if one of the major photographers took an interest in her, we would see her in more editorials, but that hasn't happened and we don't. Still despite not being an editorial or runway force she has managed to score high profile, much sought after campaigns and contracts in a difficult time; so she managed to get the end (campaigns/contracts) without going through the means (extensive runway and editorial). Go figure, but campaigns are a big factor in the MDC rankings and she is meeting that criteria, I can see having an issue if she was ranked in the Top 10 but she is ranked 22.

I do think it is totally fair to point out that models like Doutzen Kroes and Hilary Rhoda are not on the MDC 50 (although I do think that for the most part, they stopped doing runway and their editorial work is infrequent), but I suppose that is why MDC created the Money Girls list (which Hilary and Doutzen are on) and even the sexy list, unfortunately they don't keep those two lists updated, especially the Money Girls list so I doubt that many follow it after an initial perusal. Also, I think the game is changing with commercial models doing significant high fashion work as opposed to special appearances so perhaps if there is an increase in their runway and editorial work, you will see models like Doutzen and Hilary reappearing on the MDC 50 a la Miranda Kerr.

ETA:
I think the difference between Arlenis' case vs. Doutzen and Hilary is that Arlenis still does runway - it looks like by special request and even catalog work which MDC supposedly doesn't count, but I have seen them reference catalog or mass retailers clients in their blurbs / model profiles. I don't follow them closely, but from what I have seen the three of them are pretty much on par when it comes to editorials.

I don't think there's a hard and fast rule the ranking is all over the place. However it does take 2-3 years to knock someone off the number 1 spot. It's also difficult to break into spots 2 and 3.

I love Joan, but that's just ridiculous. I don't care if she has major options/work coming out, let's wait till it actually is out! #20 is just too high for now, in my opinion.

Well she's got a Gucci campaign out, but I agree that 20 is too high for now...

Perhaps the people at MDC have some inside knowledge? Since Joan was in the pre-fall Gucci campaign maybe she is in the Fall one as well? And US Vogue seems to be adopting her so its just a matter of time isn't it?
