“I think that this was the first story that I published in The Face, around 1990. It was a suburban space story, with aliens and a spaceman (played by my brother on a bike in a local shopping center). The antennae were made from a TV aerial covered in silver foil. I worked with Nigel at the same time as I worked with David Sims and Corinne Day on fashion and a lot of personal projects.”

THE SUMMER HOLIDAY

Melanie Ward, fashion director
1. Being barefoot; drinking coconut water and having picnics!
2. My summer wardrobe tends to skew masculine- meets-gypsy
With 1970s Thea Porter long dresses and Saint Laurent peasant blouses and maxi skirts in the mix.
3. Flat strappy sandals and gladiators by Azzedine and my new Valentino embellished sandals for evening
4. Céline pant suits in black and white
5. Hermes special edition trim bags with fringes by JPG
They have become my summer staples.
6. Vintage Indian cotton voile jumpsuits, dresses and shirts
I love how weightless the fabric is in the heat.
7. Sunglasses by Versace with rose tinted lenses; Hedi Slimane for Dior Homme mirror classic
wraparounds that I bought in multiples and Cartier aviators
8. Boyfriends white cotton shirts
9. Eres bikinis and swimsuits, usually black
10. Isabel Marant cotton blazers

Indispensible summer outfit:
Something simple like my vintage white gauze jumpsuit from Morocco with a Celine blazer and Givenchy gladiator sandals.
This summer’s destinationI have no ambitious travel plans yet for this summer. I may spend my break in Upstate New York and Los Angeles.
