Men's Denim

Update:
Boutique that used to sell apc in my town sold the raw denim this way: buy a size up, wash it, throw it in the dryer and then it'll fit as it's supposed to. I don't know whether this advice was from apc originally, or experimentation on their part. Because I left it too late to exchange my way baggy pair for a size down, I ignored the warning conscientiously posted by Chad and went ahead with the wash 'n dry tactic. As it turned out, worked perfectly. The only aesthetic effects were that the denim softened and the color lightened a bit, became more distinctly indigo. I dryed the jeans inside out with several towels to avoid creasing. The pair shrunk A LOT. Probably a full 2 inches in the waist and hip, and from probably a 38 inseam to about a 36 inseam. After the wash and dry the size 33 raw cure fit exactly like my size 33 vintage cure.

You need to go down a few sizes (2/3). Don't wash them, and especially DO NOT throw them in the dryer! You will get crease marks. With unwashed, you want to wear them for as long as possible without washing them, then wash them however it says to on the directions, hang dry, and repeat. That way you will get maxamised fading and wiskering (naturally, which I think is amazing). If you have to, you can soak them in cold water before you wear them to make them alittle smaller, but it's best to size correctly at first, maybe even too tight (they'll stretch a good bit). www.superfuture.com go to super talk, theirs a huge thread on APC denim that will tell you everthing you need to know.

That is one way of doing it, but as the denim will stretch as you wear it you'll probably have to shrink them fairly often, so the colour might go more quickly. Normally its best to buy any jeans at least one size down, to allow for stretch in the fabric.

If you wash them off the start, you won't get as distinct wiskers and high/low areas, but somepeople like it like that- Congrats!

Have you noticed that if one washes to shrink to fit , if the label states wash at 30° and you actually wash at 50°/60° , it buggers the leather waistband label up . It's the the price you pay for the fact that you've got them to the right size . SO maddening . It happened with a pair of original EVIS jeans I bought in 1996 , made in Japan , before the launching of the Italian-made stuff . I wept for a week .

While I'm on , has anyone ever heard of these three makes of jean , which I bought and did NOT need to have shortened , something unusual for me at 30" inside leg ?

BEAUTY/BEAST JEANS
GAIJIN JEANS
YAMANE DELUXE JEANS

Just a thought .

If you are looking for info on obscure brands- Ringring on superfuture.com knows everything- literally.

Acutally the shrunk so much they were a little tight in both the waist and hips when I first put them on. Doing some serious bends and knee raises stretched them out to a comfy size. One wearing and they've remained about there (ie still about 2 inches below what they were before washing machine attack).

I'm actually contemplating buying another pair a size down so I can try to achieve this effect....

May I suggest not buying another pair of A.P.C.'s? There are tons (they're hard to find, but they are out there) of unwashed denim companies. I think my next jeans will be nudies or something streaky.

APC's are alot harder to distress than other raw denim brands, as theirs is quite heavy and durable. Nudies are good if you want to distress some jeans yourself. Remember not to wash the denim until you've worn them at least 6 months (or 9-12 months for non 100% cotton jeans).

Any suggestions on brands of unwashed with a model as narrow fitting as the APC cures? Does nudies have one? I'm also always on the lookout for a pair of Helmut Lang unwashed in classic cut.

Try the Slim Jims or if it's not tight enough, the Super Slim Kims.

Maybe Diesel sells different jeans in different countries. I bought my Colombian-made pair of Diesel jeans in Venezuela

Then it was most probably a fake. Or maybe, with very very little chance, a pair of jeans manufactured for the south american market only.
You should go to a Diesel store and see how a real pair looks like before making assumptions and generalisations about a brand you apparently don't know well.
Diesel denim are mostly made in Italy. Some are also made in Romania, and very few in Morocco (where they mostly make non-denim stuff).

So what's everyones thoughts on Diesel jeans? I've been getting a lot of mixed views lately, some people saying quality has gone down..some people saying quality has stayed the same in the last 25 years with it only getting better.

I'd say the quality doesn't stop getting better. The price tag unfortunately follows.
The problem is that for one real pair you see three or five fakes in the streets today
Some sellers on ebay don't stop selling fakes but it doesn't prevent them from having 100% positive feedback. :yuk:

^It's actually not so much the quality that truly bothers me about Diesel. It's the designs. Do they even make a normal-looking pair of jeans without a bunch of superfluous "detail"?

Yes they do. They also make great pairs with japanese denim, cheaper and way prettier than any Evisu's if you ask me (the quality is maybe not as good, I don't know... But even if I was paid to wear anything with this ugly logo on the back pockets I don't think I would). I've also got some pairs I wouldn't take to my job though ;)
Actually, in my opinion, even the more 'distressed' ones don't look as ridiculous as some less distressed ones from Lee or Levi's where the wear marks look so much more fake...

But to each is own, I perfectly understand they're not for everyone ;)

Oh, I forgot to mention...

I've recently heard of a denim line called 'Red Monkey'...i've been told it's only exclusive to Hong Kong...

anyone have extra info?

cheers.

Sorry , I haven't , the only exclusive Hong Kong jeans that I heard of is the Evisu clone label , ETIENNE OZEKI . Reasonable , but nothing special .

BTW , I got my 2 pairs of Beauty/Beast jeans at a couple of FLANNELS - Manchester sales . Could have been surplus oki-ni stock .

The GAIJIN Jeans came from a superb little shop , now closed - GEESE - Manchester . Where I also bought two pairs ( different styles ) of YAMANE DELUXE Jeans , and a hooded denim jacket , also Yamane Deluxe .

I REALLY regret the passing of that shop on Bridge St. near to the infamous RICHARD CREME . The owner used to go frequently to Tokyo to buy the most exclusive and obscure labels , eg a pair of SUGAR CANE JEANS for £50 !!!

Ah !!! Those were the days .

BTW ,

I invested in an ' Evisu for oki-ni ' knitted cotton beanie hat yesterday , as a little pick-me-up .

NICE  .

The Cloak sample sale has skinny jeans that are some of the narrowest I've encountered. They have a higher waistline though, and the denim wasn't the sturdiest I'd seen (in black or grey, if I recall correctly), but they're super slim. The Cloak sample sale is ongoing in NYC until this weekend, I think (see the Sample Sale thread for info). They're not really at sample prices, but at $145 a pair, come out to about 45% off retail.

Did they have any of those cotton blazers with elbow flaps from FW04 over there? Or was it more SS05 they had for sale?

Mostly SS05. Someone over at the Shopaholocs thread posted that they got a Fall coat, but I don't know if it was the same pattern in a spring fabric because I know the coat he posted and I didn't recall seeing it on the racks. It could have been brought in later, I suppose...

edit: oh, wait - YOU posted that coat. I suppose you didn't get it from the sample Sale.
