 I'm really in love with her beautiful face and that lovely two-toned hair!

Definitely a clip I'm obsessed with right now! Anything Oldies I'm all over!!

I suppose it isn't really surprising that interest in Michelle is low these days, but as a member of the Baby Boom Generation, I can say there was no young lady more watched and lusted after by we young lads than Michy!! I just saw her on PBS a couple of weeks ago, and, although the years are finally catching up with her, her place in pop music history is assured...I just today finished her book and I was really sorry to see it end- what an amazing (and short) ride the Mamas and the Papas had!!
Here is a simply amazing article from Vanity Fair a couple of years ago; I guess in hindsight I am glad we didn't know the whole story back in the day... :( For whatever deep seated reason, this article had a very powerful effect on me...

There seem to be two Michelle threads... maybe they can be merged?

Amazing that a little California hippie chick could grow up to be this elegant! ;) BTW- for some inexplicable reason, none of her Knots Landing shows are out on DVD ...:o

Trivia

Mother of Chynna Phillips, Austin Hines and Aron Wilson.
Grandmother of Jamison Baldwin.
Mother-in-law of actor William Baldwin.
Was married to Dennis Hopper for 8 days.
The wildly popular The Mamas and the Papas '60s pop/folk group ("Monday, Monday" and "California Dreamin'" were their biggest hits) was comprised of Michelle and her husband at the time, John Phillips, along with 'Mama' Cass Elliot and Denny Doherty. Michelle was temporarily kicked out of the group (replaced by Jill Gibson) after it was discovered she was having an affair with the other "Papa" (Doherty), who Cass had a crush on. The fans, however, missed her and she was soon brought back, but the damage had been done and the group wasted no time in splitting up.
Former stepmother of actress Mackenzie Phillips.
Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998 (as a member of The Mamas and the Papas).
Ranked #23 on VH1's 100 Greatest Women of Rock N Roll
Grew up partly in Mexico City where her father attended college on the GI Bill.
Was good friends with the Charles Manson victims Sharon Tate, Abigail Folger, Jay Sebring and Voytek Frykowski.
When The Mamas and the Papas were in the Bahamas and couldn't afford the flight back to the US, she won 17 straight shoots at a crap table, coming out with enough money to buy first-class airplane tickets for everybody.
Sang at Denny Doherty's funeral, whose death made her the only surviving member of The Mamas and the Papas (2007).
Born to Joyce Leon, née Poole, an accountant, and Gardner Burnett Gilliam, a merchant marine.
When she was 5 and her sister was 6, their mother died and they and their father moved to Mexico City.

Personal Quotes

I will say this about Dennis Hopper: We were married for eight days and truly . . . they were the happiest days of my life.
[about her friend 'Mama' Cass Elliot] There will never be anyone like her in my lifetime. I will never have a friend like her, or an influence like her. And I will never hear another voice like hers.
I don't mind feeling naked. I'm fine with nothing.
[asked what word comes to mind when she looks into a mirror] Lucky.

Where Are They Now

(1986) Release of her autobiography, "California Dreamin': The True Story of the Mamas and the Papas".

^ Oh, I can't see a couple of them...:(
I was really stunned by her book- so much I never knew!! (although I guess most everyone had no idea what was really going on back when...!) The first book in recent memory that I hated to see end!! ;)

michelle phillips' book or mazkenzie phillips' book? i know mackenzie allegedly went through a lot of pain ..

Oh, Michelle's book 'California Dreaming'...I haven't read John's book 'Papa John', partly because evidently much of it isn't 'actual'...Michelle was livid when it came out- there seem to be lots of misrepresentations, according to the other people that were there...
I have a cousin that I am really close to that went through just what Mackenzie went through, so I have a hard time reading about her relationship with her father...:(

yea i cant read it either but ive seen some of her interviews about it, what an awful awful thing to do to one's own daughter :(
difficult to see pictures of him on this thread when you think of how monstrous he was

^ Yes, an evil genius for sure...brilliant musician, but a very messed up man otherwise...(He was at the Naval Academy for two years and invented a medical reason to get out because he didn't like it, all of this typical of him and way before Michelle was around...) He managed to blame everything on Michelle, who unfortunately, wasn't a saint in those days either. But in her book she admits to what she did wrong, something John never seemed to consider himself...:(
