WE catch up Miranda Kerr following her secret intimate wedding, and she is bursting with happiness.
The streets of LA are eerily quiet on this misty June morning. It’s just before 5am and I’m on my way to meet supermodel Miranda Kerr at LA’s famous Milk Studios, so I’m happy to take advantage of the lack of traffic.
You might call it the calm before the storm.
The team from sunday magazine has flown in from Australia for an exclusive photoshoot with the woman who’s arguably our biggest modelling export. I’m tagging along to see Kerr in action, though I won’t be interviewing her today, as the busy bee has to leave by noon to catch a flight to New York. Our chat will happen later and, for now, I’ve been asked to lurk in the background.
It’s an odd request but, at this unearthly hour, lurking’s about all I can manage. Not that I’m complaining; legions of teenage boys and bankers would give anything for this kind of intimate study. Sitting just a few feet away from her perky bikini-clad bottom, it’s easy to see how she’s earned her No 9 position on Forbes’ list of the world’s highest paid models, with estimated earnings of US $4m for last year alone. (The spokesmodel for David Jones is also a coveted Victoria’s Secret Angel and a darling of the catwalk.) I’m unable to spot an ounce of cellulite anywhere on her lithe body, and I find myself cursing my parents’ genes and inwardly sobbing. She’s perfect.
The 27-year-old checks her BlackBerry often, snacks on fruit and carries a tube of Vegemite in her bag. In between shots, as she sips juice through a straw to avoid ruining her make-up, it’s obvious she has the glow of not just a woman in love. (As it turns out, she was in the final stages of planning her wedding.) Despite her globetrotting lifestyle, Kerr is fresh-faced and bright-eyed, with smiles for all, even after today’s 4am alarm call. Apparently, to get on her good side, you just have to let her enjoy a night’s sleep in her own bed - one of which is here in LA (the other one is in New York).
“It’s the biggest luxury in my life,” she says. “When most people have a holiday, they want to go away, but for me it’s, ‘Let’s stay home and have a holiday!’ It’s a hectic treadmill at the moment and has been for the past five years.”
The model refuses to be fazed by the regular early starts. “Because of my limited time, I try to maximise the very few hours I get to sleep at night,” she says. “In the mornings, I give myself 15 minutes to get out of the house. I jump in the shower, throw on a dress, moisturise my face and then I’m out the door. I don’t have time to think about it. As soon as the alarm goes, I’m up. I never hit the snooze button.”
The shoot goes well and, of course, the pictures are stunning. But all this is window dressing because, just days later, we’re told the exciting news that Kerr and her moviestar boyfriend Orlando Bloom are engaged. Catching up with her the following week, I’m given the gentle warning - to not probe too deeply with the personal questions (which seems a tad unfair, when she’s currently making headline news), but I dip my toe in the water and offer my congratulations. “Thank you very much,” she says, cheerfully.
Kerr and Bloom’s romance has been pure fairytale from day one. They met backstage at a Victoria’s Secret lingerie fashion show in New York in 2006, where she famously refused to give him her number because she was seeing someone else. He persisted and they started dating in 2007.
For the past three years, the couple have done their best to keep their relationship out of the spotlight. Still, when we talk, she does nothing to hide her desire for a family: “I’ve always been open about wanting to be a mother one day, and I’ve always thought Orlando would be a great dad.”
As for how that will fit in with her career, she has plenty of people to ask for advice, including her Victoria’s Secret colleagues. “I think having children and pregnancy is a part of life,” she says matter-of-factly. “I look at how models like Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima and Alessandra Ambrosio have done it and made it a part of their lives.” (All three models went back to work within months of giving birth.)
It’s hardly surprising she’s keen to start her own brood; family’s everything to Kerr.
“I always try to make time to see my friends and family when I’m back in town for a show. All of them, including my grandma, come. It’s wonderful to see her there, smiling, so I make sure she sits in the front row with my mum, dad and brother. She loves the different fashions.”
Of course, her grandmother was destined to be disappointed because, instead of strutting down the catwalk for David Jones on August 3, as planned, Kerr eloped with her man. She and Bloom married in secret, spending time at the Viceroy Anguilla resort in the Caribbean.
Catching up with the model, post-nuptials, she’s still full of the joy of a summer wedding. “[Our wedding] was exactly what we both hoped for,” she says, “and it turned out as planned in every way. We always intended for the wedding to be a private and intimate occasion and we haven’t shared any details as it’s something we’d like to keep as our special secret.”
Meanwhile, the rumour mill has gone into overdrive, suggesting the covert wedding isn’t the only exciting news for the Blooms, and that they may also be expecting their first child.
(Nothing has been confirmed at the time of press, although Klum has been quoted as saying, “They’ll make a handsome baby, that’s for sure.”)
Thinking back to the photoshoot, I ask myself whether I missed any signs of pregnancy. Kerr tucked into banana bread in between shots - does that point to a pregnant woman or just a sensible one? “I get all my nutrients from what I eat,” said the model, when asked. “I’d be exhausted if I didn’t. Eating organic and drinking lots
of water is important to your state of mind, as is thinking positively.”
Was there any other evidence? sunday’s fashion director, a new mother herself, had two cents to put in: “Miranda asked me about stretch marks and had lots of questions about being pregnant.”
Now there’s a red flag. And then there were the adorable pictures of Kerr being greeted by Bloom at Heathrow Airport just days before their secret wedding. In one shot, her tummy is covered with a long wrap and she’s smiling at him, while he stares in what looks like wonder at her belly. The pieces seem to fall into place, and it’s nothing if not admirable the way Kerr has kept this special time under the radar.
Away from the spotlight, it does seem as though she enjoys a quiet life. She famously once said, “My ideal situation would be to live on a farm in a solar-powered house with a hammock and a vegetable patch. When this is all over, that’s where I’ll be.”
While retirement is probably a long way off, let’s hope Kerr gets to enjoy a few lazy mornings in bed before a baby comes along.
“I don’t know if you ever get used to being up at 4am,” she laughed, while having her shots taken for our fashion pages. “Because of my schedule, I’m getting used to being up at that time now, but I wouldn’t get up that early by choice.” Baby Bloom might have something to say about that.

their babies will be adorable!
