C Magazine September 2012: Katie Holmes

SEIZING THE DAY: It’s always difficult to predict whether an actress — even an A-list one — will sell on a given magazine cover, but when Elle’s perfectly timed August issue hit newsstands earlier this month with Katie Holmes, there was almost no doubt it would fly off shelves. The magazine, featuring a sexier-than-normal Holmes in a black bra peeking out of her white tank top, came out just days after the news hit that she would divorce Tom Cruise.

Elle isn’t the only magazine with good timing on its side. C Magazine shot Holmes for its September issue just seven days before she filed for divorce and the interview took place only one day prior to her big announcement. Senior editor Kelsey McKinnon, who met with Holmes for the interview, said that while the actress wasn’t bragging about her five-year marriage, she certainly didn’t seem to be standing at the edge of a precipice, either. “Going back over the tapes, there were signs: Holmes was certainly very aware of herself, laying a couple cards on the table but never showing her whole hand,” McKinnon wrote. “Most noticeably, the one name decisively absent from her lexicon: Tom Cruise. She never actually refers to him by name over pages and pages of transcription.” When McKinnon asked if having Suri brought the couple closer together, Holmes added, “I don’t know. I mean…I don’t know. People have been having babies a long time.”

During this postdivorce press tour, Holmes has been talking less about relationships and more about acting (she’s been cast in a Broadway play) and the fourth season of Holmes & Yang, her fashion brand that will show at the Bowery Hotel in September. Holmes met Jeanne Yang through Cruise — Yang has been his stylist for years, although one expects that relationship now likely to end.

Looks very bland, she's a hard one to photograph. Her face can look very angular sometimes and not in a good way...

Also, why is she pulling up her skirt?

I'm guessing every magazine wants to sell her as sexy now that she's single. I don't like this shot, but I absolutely love her face in general.

I get that vibe too, I think she's a beautiful girl but not really someone I think of as being ~sexy~ more of a sweet, girl next door type - very relatable and approachable. Would rather see her photographed in a way that shows off her natural beauty, than like this because it just seems a little too forced.

I agree. Here it seems they were trying to make an Angelina Jolie out of her (black dress showing a lot of leg, and I've never seen Katie with her hair styled like this either), and that's just not her. She looks sad, not confident or sexy.
