Is Sasha's last name really made up?

I heard about a Russian thing where girls have to attach 'ova' to their father's last names when they get their name, hence Maria Sharapova, Anna Kournikova, etc. whereas boys just attach 'ov', like Sergei Federov.

So I always figured Sasha's father's name was Pivova.

It's their middle name that is their fathers', not their last name, but they still have to add the 'ova' to their last name.

I used to study the Russian Tsars, and the father's name was Nicholas Romanov, so the daughter's middle name was 'Nichol-aevna' and the son's middle name was 'Nichol-aevitch'. And the last name doesn't change for the boys but the girls add 'ova'.
