Hi, I've been looking into purchasing an mp3 player except I really don't know anything about them or how they work. Do I need to pay for the songs I download or are there any safe free sites available? I've been hesitant on buying one for awhile since I've had problems with computer viruses and I'm afraid of downloading songs or using anything that could cause me any more problems. Any basic information is appreciated and I hope I don't sound like I'm living in the ice age since so many people own one  Thanks for your help.

YOu're supposed to pay for the songs :innocent: but most people don't :ninja:

i know i dont :ninja:

How much are you looking to pay? From there we can reccoment you things in your price range.

^I would be willing to pay up to $175 US. I was looking at ipods but alot are around $300 or up.

Honestly, I love my ipod.. and I'd never buy another mp3 player. *shrug* I also use Limewire and Winmx for songs.

Generally if you want to know how many songs you can have, take the number of mb and divide by 5.

If you get a sony mp3 player, the software they give you allows you to convert to atrac3 allowing more songs because it compacts it into a smaller file. I have a 256mb sony mp3 player with about 140 songs on it, although if it was a different make, i could probaly only have about 52.

For 199 you could get an 4gb ipod mini

Apple® - iPod™ mini 4GB* MP3 Player - Green M9806LL/A
Measures just 0.5" thin, weighs only 3.6 oz.; up to 18 hours playback; 1.7" LCD; iTunes 4.7.1 software; USB 2.0

I have a Creative Mp3 player and they are as good as Ipods. If that's of course if you are so tired of everyone having ipods all around you (like me).
What you can do is to buy cds and then transfer the songs to the mp3 player.

search for the "ipod vs the competition" thread in 'shop till you drop' that might help a bit..

Thanks everyone for all your help  I'm pretty sure now that I'll try something other than an ipod. Karma for you yourbestfriend for all your info, I really appreciate it.

why not try the ipod as well? The thing I like about ipods is that they have tons of accessories out there, but you could go for a jukebox that plays videos as well like the ARCHOS, but you have also a budget to think of and the Archos's usually cost right around 300 dollars:doh:

but you could get a 60 GB colour ipod for free here:

I'm getting mine:wink:

I know some people get the iPod for trend which is really dumb, but I bought it because I need it and I really love it compared to 3 other mp3 players I've had.... what I liked is it has so much GB compared to others....it was easy and fast to get my music transfered, lots of battery time, its durable (Ive dropped it so many times sadly, but its fine...just scratched in need of a polish service....also I've always killed my headphones but apple is nice about replacing them twice for free already....my other player died around this time after christmas and my pod is still strong....seriously sad how much my electronics get a beating...if they could talk I'm sure half would protest...specially the iPod that gets dropped a lot ), did I mention its cute? (at least I think so :P) Seriously the best Christmas give I've been given by my stepdad so far.

Well if you really dislike the fact everyone has that white friggin thing sticking out their pocket.... you can have it custom painted at colorware or less permanent you can put the Hp printable Ipod "tattoos" on it and change as you like, but a nice case on it (and that nicely protects it from looking like my abused lil friend :innocent:)...order online at apple.com and you can custom engrave it on the back etc. There's ways to put your mark on it and make if different from everyone elses. :flower:

Something I found out about iPods....you can play movies with them too....just you need to have a player attachement :P....I forget that the ipod is really a portable harddrive and you can store it there...my boyfriend bought this player for the iPod in Japan so he can watch videos without carrying a crapload of DVD's with him all the time when he's traveling.
