Hey everyone. I'm studying make-up artistry and i need to do my portfolio and I'm stuck for ideas. The looks i need to create are
- Colour
- Bridal
- Fantasy or Oriental
- Black and White
- Fashion or Catwalk
- Glamour

I have an idea for colour but i'm stuck for everything else.

Does anyone have any ideas or any pictures i can draw inspiration from?

I have already looked at the "inspiring make-up art" thread which is great :D

I hope you can help me

 Mk

p.s sorry if this isnt in the right section or something

It´s better if you do a search on make up brands sites like Bobbi Brown or Mac for some inspirational pictures on some of the looks you need to create.

If you have an idea of the make ups you are going to create, test them first on you. That´s what i do! I try all my make ups on me first because i´m allways available! :D
Or, try them on your friends and see if they work or not.

If they do work you can them set an amateur photo shoot. Choose a friend in which the make up you choose works and take some pictures in a set that goes with the make up you are doing. Choose also the clothes and hair to go with all of that.

If you have the oppurtunity to have real models the better, but since you are starting that should be more difficult to get.

Also, have a computer folder with all the ispirational pics so that will give you a more specific idea of all the st that is behind every photo.

You really need to interiorize all the work that is involved every picture. And don´t expect everything to work out for the first time. All you need is a HUGE lot of PRACTICE!!! :D

I did this pic using a friend, my make up, her own necklace creation, my house and a digital camera, and i think i got a great picture.

practice practice practice
& get hold of photoshop if yr using a digital camera
often in digital pics the colours are dull & flat
using the curves tools in photoshop you can tweak the colours
& get them vibrant which is really important when photographing makeup :flower:

for your fantasy make-up try my single feather eyelashes, jewels and glitter. the glitter is made from paper so it works wonders and shines bright as the moon. as a matter of fact you can use our stuff for the catwalk look and the glamour look too! get my site addie from my profile on this site, i would paste it here but the mods may not like that

the lashes are fun and easy to work with and just peeking at the site may spark some creativity! take a look and let me know what ya think. good luck and make sure you post your portfolio photos here so i can see:D

Your effort is great. Keep at it, and as long as you are having fun, there are no rules.

sofialuv: Your friend is gorgeous! And her skin looks flawless.

Oh and when you take the photos, use GOOD lighting to compliment her feautures. If you want your subject to appear pure use a bright white light. You could also take it on a sunny day. And for dramatic looks you could dim the light down a bit and focus on the features you want emphasized.

You have loads of reference material elsewhere on this site - particulary in the model section (aka supporting cast). You can also check out make up artist agent sites like (no particular order)
http://www.carolhayesmanagement.co.uk
http://www.terrietanaka.com/
http://www.clmus.com/

One thing though, is this portfolio part of your course, or is it for use afterwards? If it is the latter and you are aiming for fashion work, you really need to concentrate on nude/natural looks.

Also the quality of model and photographer will play a huge part as unfortunatly, make up artists don't just get judged by their work alone. Beg/bribe up and coming photographers to work with you rather than DIY, and make sure they are using agency new faces (who are surprisingly easy to get hold of) rather than your mates.

hey everyone :D finished my portfolio- it was for my course but i might decide to use it after for work

It turned out ok but i didnt expect and artwork because i have just learnt make-up. I might scan some pics and show you when i get the portfolio back,

We used a professional photographer- the best in my city apparently lol

if you go on M.A.C website they have how to create a wedding inspired look...hope this helps

All about portfolio

Ok, you know, in fashion, you need a portfolio, either as makeup artist, designers, models, photographer, or an artist; and the portfolio is quite important. My question is, how to start? How to build a porttfolio? Where to get models and photographers? How much would it cost to get a portfolio.

I know for makeup, a no more than 12 or 15 page portfolio is enough, and you need to update your portfolio at least once a decade. So please answer my questions above.

for models you could probably find people in the street or friends that are willing to do it for free or in exchange for a copy of the photo or something like that.. A photographer would probably be the most expensive part of it. Maybe you could find a person that has just started photography thats willing to do it for a small price if money is an issue?

You need
1.great photogreapher
2.real models

you dont necessarily need real models just people that are gorgeous have great skin and have enough confidence to be able to model for you

This advice is right on the mark.

You must master a flawless natural look to impress anyone in the fashion world enough to hire you. That is how professional makeup artists are judged .

Also, everything in the image has to be professional level. One mistep like using the wrong model for the look, or poor styling or a not so great photographer renders the image less than "bookworthy" even if you did a great job with the makeup.

So you always have to "test up" ... meaning work with increasingly better and better photographers who use agency models and good fashion stylists too. That is how you get your portfolio up to professional level and hope to compete with the thousands of other makeup artists out there. It should take about 2 years to do this ... if you are testing a lot.
