Rainbow bright: Mya celebrates her 32nd birthday in a day-glow bandage dress
Mya brought some serious heat to Miami last night as she celebrated her 32nd birthday.
The R&B singer looked sultry and stunning in a neon frock as she partied with friends at the Mansion nightclub in Florida ten days after her actual birthday of October 10th.
StyleBlazer Exclusive: Mya Teams Up With Koshie O. Brand (Fashion With A Purpose!)
At a photo shoot in a Midtown penthouse, we caught up with one of our most beloved high school icons. With her hair pulled back in a bun of soft curls, sky high black booties, and the only must-have dress of the season, Mya rocked her photo shoot for Koshie O. Brand, an African-inspired line with a great mission. The printed green dress she rocks lovely is dubbed the “Earth and Wind Babydoll,” a name totally appropriate for the soft spoken muse. We love that Mya is lending her beauty and elegance to the line, and she will donate 10% of the proceeds from the dress to Mercy Corps, to help those in need all over the African continent. Fashion with a cause. We love it already!
We chatted wth the R&B darling about her new fashion collabo, future aspirations in the industry, and her signature style.
StyleBlazer: How did you team up with Koshie O.?
Mya: Well, my management actually got in touch with Koshie O., and I’ve been doing a lot of work with Africa for the last three years. So everything kind of cross-pollinates. But I think through my management, that’s how it all started.
StyleBlazer: You’re definitely known for your style. What elements of your signature style did you bring to the collection?
Mya: Well, I love color. I love color! And Koshie O. already possesses a lot of color blocking as well as color palettes. And they’re rich colors, primary colors to be exact, which I love. If it’s not neon, I like to play with several. And art, is actually one of my fortes, as a painter. So I’m into color, earth tones are her forte as well. With every line, every season that she’s done. And that’s a strong focal point for Koshie O brand. As far as what I brought to the table? I mean, I’m learning myself [laughs]. I can’t really say. In terms of modeling the clothes, my personal style is exuded and conveyed. But I gave my two cents. But I think the cause of teaming up with Mercy Corps, the proceeds for this particular line going to that cause is what stands out the most for me. I was able to contribute just a little, just a touch.
SB: Now that ’90s style is coming back, like Azealia Banks’ crop tops and pant suits. What’s a style that you’re happy to see return?
Mya: I’ve actually fallen in love with skinny jeans with a more contemporary style. The ’90s were more bell bottom or boot cut oriented, which I don’t mind. With the kind of shoes that are present now, high heels, you can actually rock boot cut jeans. Not everything has to be tight. So I hope they come back in style [laughs]. You know, because everything is so ankle oriented and stretch, and I like a more classic look, which actually “Fallen” had. It was very every day, and that’s kind of what I’m looking forward to.
SB: Who are some of your style icons?
Mya: As a performer, Prince has always been a style icon for me, from his heels to just to his trademark. He creates a niche every time he wears something, and I’ve been really in love with the high-colored look for a long time. When a female rocks it, it’s a little bit different and unexpected. But that’s what I enjoy doing as a performer. Mixing a little bit of femininity with something more masculine. It’s a nice balance, and I love that. It makes me feel a lot stronger versus just dainty and more kick*ss.
SB: Your curls always look great. Is there a product to keep your curls as bouncy as they are?
Mya: It really depends on the season, the environment, what I’m doing. If I’m performing, I’ll put additional pieces in there for weight, because my hair doesn’t have any weight to it. It tends to frizz up and change textures, especially if there’s a kind of a physical activity or sweat or humidity involved. But there’s all kinds of products, and I’ve been using something that’s really lightweight. It doesn’t wear your hair down, and you don’t have to wash it every day, and it stays in place. So those products have really been working for me lately and I’m just trying things, because I’m always experimenting [laughs]. But that’s been working.
SB: What would we find you wearing on a day off?
Mya: Probably sweatpants and a t-shirt [laughs]. And some slippers if I’m not working. Or sneakers, or something like that. I have animals, so just something where I can get dirty [laughs]. I have dogs and cats, and a niece. So activewear most likely. Heels are the last thing that I’m wearing. When it’s time to turn it on that’s when I love wearing heels. They’re very uncomfortable so I keep a spare pair of flats always, if I’m going to do something like that. But, on my off days I’m wearing flip flops, slippers, some kind of like UGG boot [laughs].
SB: Now that you’re working with Koshie O., do you have any more aspirations in fashion?
Mya: Of course. I’ve always been designing, since before my first record deal. And I just wanted my mom to make the outfits. For my prom dress, I was about 16, and I designed it on paper, she made it. And it’s always been just a girl’s dream to create, whether it’s clothing or bracelets, or whatever it is. I’m a creative person. So yes, I do have aspirations but it would be a more conscious aspiration. I love animals, and there are not that many clothing lines out there that are vegan, you know, no byproducts of animals or smart thinking, or for a more global perspective. I go into Saks or Lord & Taylor, and the only line that I’m familiar with, you know, is Stella McCartney that’s vegan. But you know, for my culture and fly girls in the younger market, there’s not really much of quality that doesn’t entail animals. So something more conscious.
SB: When can we expect more music from you?
Mya: I have an album for you. I’ve been releasing albums every year since 2008 independently, but in different territories of the world. But this February 14, 2012, I released something called K.I.S.S., Keep It Hot and Simple. And just selling it on my website, myamya.com, and through iTunes and amazon.com as well, and I kind of have my own independent store [laughs] going on, before the major release. I’m just giving my fans appetizers.
SB: What’s the best part of your collaboration with Koshie O.?
Mya: Well, it’s been really really great, working with Koshie O. I love the style. It’s very unique, it’s very ethnic and modern, and it definitely caters to the every day woman. I would have to say I go to fashion shows. Fashion Week is coming up by the way, and I love all the stuff that I see on the runway, but I would never be caught dead in it at a grocery store [laughs], or even work sometimes, I don’t want that much attention and sometimes it’s just no wearable. But her line, you could wear it anywhere, and it appeals to the every day woman.
