Bus Stop Arrives Via Japan
By Sharon Edelson

NEW YORK — While Barneys New York, Tiffany & Co. and Coach have opened shops in Tokyo, Japanese retailers have been slow to reciprocate. Aside from Takashimaya, few Japanese retail concepts have arrived on these shores.

Now Via Bus Stop, which has variously been called a mini department store and a Japanese Barneys New York (although Barneys New York exists in Japan), is opening its flagship today at 172 Mercer Street. The 2,700-square-foot store on the corner of East Houston Street offers women’s wear, handbags and accessories. A 2,700-square-foot basement devoted to men’s apparel will be unveiled later this year.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Onward Kashiyama,The store’s unique merchandise comes from collections it produces for the Japanese market for Chalayan, Willhelm, Trosman, Pearson and Hash, as well as Seta Ichiro and Vaughan Alexander.
Bus Stop Co. Ltd., which was founded in 1994, operates 17 freestanding stores throughout Japan as well as corners in department stores. There are also Via Bus Stop Jeans and Via Bus Stop Accessory Corner stores.

OT, I  Takashimaya.

Ok, I checked it out today. Softie, I'm in love  . I think you should definitely check out the merchandise. Both Chalayn lines, but especially the new one are light and dreamy, and Ann Valerie Hash stuff is just :woot:   :crush: . The price points are actually very decent, I was surprised (I thought AVH stuff would be very expensive). I almost walked away with a denim jacket by AVH with a shawl-like collar, but they didn't have my wife's size  .I didn't have time to check everything out. I'll come back with my wife.

NEWSFLASH: They will have men's stuff in the summer for A/W 05.

The store itself is a bit of an oxymoron, though. The merchandise is very romantic, very light and playful, but the look of the store is very posh on a snobbier side. The salespeople are very friendly (as they should be in a new store), but the way they are dressed is completely the opposite of what they sell in the store - they look like they work in Bergdorf. Maybe it's the first day's bloopers.

Opps, that's right!

Didn't notice EP stuff, but I wasn't looking for it. Wait, maybe I did notice. I think I saw one CDGish looking jacket, which I liked... Shoes/accessories didn't do much for me, they are the same as everywhere, pointy toes, bla, bla. I didn't take a careful look though. I am not sure if there is a second floor. I was pressed for time. I'd have to come back and take a more careful look. I want to take Yelena too...

I WORSHIP Takashimaya :p

I didn't realize Via Bus Stop was Japanese...if it's anything like Takashimaya, I'll be making a pilgrimage there soon!
