September 30, 2004 -- ATTENTION, New Yorkers: Start cleaning out your closets. From Oct. 15 through 17, Central Park's Rumsey Playfield will be transformed into what's being billed as "the largest tag sale ever."
Celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg (who are co-chairwomen of the event), Bette Midler, Susan Lucci and Gary Sheffield have all donated special items for the sale, which benefits the city's Fund for Public Schools.
Rumsey Field will be divided into booths - ranging from $1 tables to $25 tables to "special item" tables.
The latter will be stocked with mountains of Manolo Blahniks, Fendi bags, Vera Wang gowns and other designer clothes.
If you're looking for that special something with a celebrity lineage, SJP has donated a slew of outfits she wore on "Sex and the City," along with small personal items, like a Swarovski crystal cell-phone cover and household appliances.
"Sarah is very supportive because she went to public school here in New York," says co-chair Robin Domeniconi, president of Real Simple magazine (which is launching the event).
"Sarah Jessica's son will also be going to public school," Domeniconi continues. "She knew [all] about the zoning of public schools - she even knew where my child would go by asking where I live."
Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg - who until recently served as the vice chairwoman for the Fund for Public Schools - in particular, has been involved.
"Caroline's been at weekly meetings and meeting anyone we'd like," Domeniconi says. "She's got her heart in it."
Domeniconi is equally excited by the quality of the donated cast-offs.
"[Yankee] Gary Sheffield donated his team jacket," she says. "Bette Midler donated tons of handbags. Susan Lucci donated the dress and bag she wore to the Emmys the year she won."
As with any good tag sale, there's an early-bird preview. For $35, New Yorkers can get VIP dibs on the tag sale's best goods, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Oct. 15.
And you don't have to be a celeb to donate or participate.
"We're organizing New York City," says Domeniconi. "It's motivating all New Yorkers in all five boroughs to clean out their closets and donate to the biggest tag sale in New York."
The sale will be held Oct. 15-17, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine, at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park; enter at 72nd Street and Fifth Avenue.
Admission is free. There are collection sites in every borough, and at all Washington Mutual Bank branches. Call 1-866-4-DECLUTTER or log onto to getorganizednewyork.com for more information on how to donate or volunteer.
