From Alabama to the global spotlight, how has your Southern childhood influenced your fashion sense and confidence in the fashion world?
OLANDRIA CARTHEN: Growing up in Alabama helped me develop a special love for dressing well. Southern fashion is beautiful — it’s clean, sophisticated, yet still has personality. I love clothes that have a defined silhouette and a statement piece. My beauty lies in the balance between elegance and self-expression — that’s the root of my style.
HBZVN: Fans call you “Bama Barbie”. How has that nickname become a symbol of confidence and self-expression?
OLANDRIA CARTHEN: “Bama Barbie” started out as a fun nickname, but it became something more. For me, Barbie has always represented the possibility of achieving anything — she can be anything. Combined with “Bama,” it became a reminder of where I came from, and of the little girl who dared to dream big.
HBZVN: You've walked for Sergio Hudson and wowed at Off-White and Alexander Wang shows. What do you think about before you walk the runway?
OLANDRIA CARTHEN: It’s a little nerve-wracking, but I always take a deep breath and remind myself: This is my moment. I feel grateful to be there. I believe that I was born to do this — and with that belief, I can’t fail. I also think about the effort behind each show, and I feel like it’s my job to bring each design to life.
HBZVN: Your Instagram page is very attractive. What do you hope women will get when they view your personal page?
OLANDRIA CARTHEN: I want women to look at my page and feel inspired to love themselves, to be confident in all aspects of themselves. Confidence is beauty. I want anyone who sees a part of themselves in me to know that they can achieve anything, just believe that they were born to do something different. Listen to your intuition and work hard for what you believe is meant for you.
HBZVN: When you're not working, what's your daily style like? And what beauty item can you never leave the house without?
OLANDRIA CARTHEN: My go-to style is cozy chic—comfortable yet sophisticated. And I never leave the house without my favorite lip duo!
HBZVN: If your current life had a title, what would it be – “Fashion, Logistics & Lip Gloss” or something more interesting?
OLANDRIA CARTHEN: I think I would call it “Faith, Fashion & Forward Motion”. That’s my spirit right now.
HBZVN: What upcoming projects does Olandria Carthen have that you are excited to share with the public?
OLANDRIA CARTHEN: My current goal is to inspire and shine a light on my community, especially supporting HBCUs. I am entering the most creative phase of my career, and while I can’t reveal specifics yet, I am really excited for everyone to see what’s next!
