I saw on tv Oprah s bestfriend Gale speaking about the incident and she said that Oprah would never play the race card but this time, it was about racism. She didn t go into the details but she said that Oprah s furious and that she most definitly will be speaking about it when she comes back from vacation in september.
*sigh* Who is this Gale woman, I keep hearing of her but what exactly does she do? Anyways, both Hermes and Oprah's Camp denied the charges of racism, so what is Gale talking about? I guess she's totally out of touch with Oprah then. Like I said, Im sure Hermes is shaking in thier bespoke croc riding boots.

This is ridiculous.

Hermes' sterling jewelry, and belt buckles are made in Africa by tribespeople then sent to France to be finished.

Will this be a claim to racism by Oprah?

Gale and Oprah have been bestfriends for the longest time and she works at Harpo. She has been on the show many times and I believe what she said because nobody can get more truthful info than her, since it s straight from Oprah. So I guess we ll just have to wait and see

ok i gave up 3/4 of the way through the thread

i agree that this is a race issue. even if they knew it was her. they wouldn't let her in because or her color.

i love oprah and i hope she tells the whole world!

<<< Oprah's audience.

this has been an interesting thread, especially with the conflicting reports. i'll be interested to hear what oprah says on her show in the fall.

I just saw that interview with Gale and she said that Oprah thinks that it s the most humiliating experience in her entire life, because they knew who she was. According to Gale, Oprah will never be a customer at Hermes ever again and from now on, she ll do business elsewhere where she is appreciated as a customer.Oprah also said that this would ve never happened to Madonna,Britney Spears or Celine Dion.

(emphasis mine)

Sounds like she pulled the Diva card, and any racial content was Oprah's camp's assumption.

Not really related, but how popular IS Oprah in France anyway? Or really, how popular is she outside of the US? Anyone know? I live in Canada, and we all know her of course, and for the most part really like her, though I don't think she's AS popular here as she is in the states. Still a fan, though this whole ordeal has me a little annoyed with her.

once again, the store said that they were having problems "with north africans' therefore, there were racial undertones in their decision not to let her in...and from your comment, i take it you have never experienced what it is like to be treated badly based on your race...it is so utterly humiliating and disempowering

Both sides denied the racism, so the fact is that Oprah was arrived after the store had closed for a private party. Not that she arrived and was black.

Hermes doesn't care that Oprah won't ever shop at Hermes, that's one more Birkin for SJP or anyone else with 6-50k. Hermes can afford to be exclusive and piss people off, they have such limited stock that all of thier bags will be sold either way. Thier clothes are a different story, they dont sell very well. I love thier clothes though (S/S at least), I went to the Hermes in Tysons and the clothes sort of fit Hermes they were very unGaultier, which was a surprise.

I like Oprah but I'm disappointed that she has to wait until September to explain her side. WHY????? If this was "the most humiliating experience in her life" and she wanted to take a strong stand against racism, and send a strong message to a rich and powerful company then why not set the story straight TODAY?

If she has to wait until her show in September, then it seems to me she's milking the publicity and sympathy for all it's worth until then. And this decision personally makes me feel less trusting of her and I don't think their version is as credible . I feel that waiting 3-4 months before revealing Oprah's version of the truth or story is somewhat a manipulation of the public sentiment.

Any kind of publicity is good publicity. Unfortunately I think this will work on Hermes behalf, like someone else stated in the previous posts.

as more details come oout i'm sure it was oprah having a diva moment. personally i think she's one of the few women who's actually justified in having a diva moment (self made black female billionare and argubly the most influential women in the us).
anyway - if she was after a watch why not go to any other department store or every other jewelry store in paris - guess she wanted the orange carrier bag like everyone else...

this is all just so-freaken stupid:angry: . gale's probably bitter because oprah's boycott probably means that she (gale) will not be recieveing any more "free" hermes gifts from her best friend. and oprah's diva like behaviour is completely unacceptable. that north african's statement holds absolutely no water. have you ever seen how oprah normally dresses? she's not exactly the model for all potential shop-lifters. and to dedicate the first show of her new season to her "crash" experience just shows how she keeps everything in perspective.

i now hate oprah and refuse to watch her show ever again. i don't care if i even get invited to her "favorite things" special. her self-promotion and ego has rose to such new heights that only the inhumane can tolerate. :yuk: hermes did nothing wrong in my book nor is their staff racist. i'm a minority and shop at their store all the time in my "bummy" gear. [Note - i'm a normal middle-class person (i.e. no richy mommy/daddy/sugardaddy to buy my goods - just hard work nor am i a celebrity)]. they never once turned up their noses at me or refused entrance to their store.

in fact if you look at this incident outside of the U.S, it just portrays hermes in a good light believe it or not.

agreed - however just becase you're a billlionare (in the US) does not mean that everyone else (in other countries) have to bend over backwards to your ever desire. $$$ can buy you tons of stuff but obviously it does not buy good manners or humility.:innocent:

Hang-on!

So what if she was having a diva moment! What if it WERE Madonna, or Celine, or even Gweneth instead of Oprah. Don't you think it would have been a different story?
