i agree all the "neo-new wave" is overrated...franz fedinand, the killers, bloc party, etc...they all have catchy songs but no staying power.

^Yeah, people just don't really know who Joy Division was. And I've met a number of New Order fans who don't even know that New Order is Joy Division without Ian Curtis. I also agree with The Cure. Everyone knows them for their worst and/or most ridiculous poppy songs like "Friday I'm In Love," "Lovecats," "Close To Me," etc. Very sad.

James Blunt is definitely overrated. As is Bright Eyes, the Black Eyed Peas, the Shins, Hellogoodbye (EEEEEWWWW), and Kings of Leon.

Underrated? James Taylor. Nick Drake.

The Black Eyed Peas used to be very good. Check out their first album, Behind The Front. Doesn't even sound like the same group...well, technically it's not (no Fergie). I would say James Taylor is overrated. And I wouldn't call Nick Drake underrated because there are TONS of people who are constantly singing his praises.

I think My Chemical Romance is great. I love their style and I think they have a lot to bring to the table. I think a lot of people tend to push them away because they are mainstream and appeal more to emo kids and annoying scenesters, but if you listen to all of their material over the years, a lot of it is actually pretty good. And this is coming from someone who used to HATE them. You just have to give them a chance.

I agree that Nirvana is WAAAAAAY overrated. Kurt Cobain was just an okay song writer. His stuff was never too captivating. He's an icon because of the way he dressed, and a lot of people don't see that. They are attracted to his image, so they obsess about his music because, well, it's part of the package. You ask Nirvana fans what they like about the band's music, and they will most likely talk about anything after "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because they don't know the music. They just listen to the popular stuff. Typical.

I think I agree with mooost of the previous posts except that I think Coldplay is FAN-tastic (if some of their less fantastic songs ... ahem, "Clocks" ... are beaten to a bloody pulp on radio rotations) ... and I genuinely adore Death Cab, Bright Eyes, and Pink Floyd.
