Please Help Me With My Homework/Research/Survey

I'm thinking that this site might have some info about "foreign" fashion brands too, if you dig through old issues ... although these articles are about Chinese labels:
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2013-04/03/content_16371570.htm

Here's an interesting video about a Chinese American family bringing it back to China: http://www.thoughtfulchina.com/building-chinese-fashion-brands-en.html and other upstart Chinese labels.

And this site seems to have lot's of bits about China and fashion, here's a search I did in their fashion section, keyword: China: http://www.l2thinktank.com/index.php?s=China&=

Not sure if these will be of any use ... but I found them interesting.

Hi Everyone,

I am suppose to be researching new, exciting, or possible ideas that other brands may be using in order to gain consumer base in China. I am researching on WWD but I don't think that's the best place to start. Could anyone lead me into a direction that would be healpful? TIA!

i would try searching the nytimes instead or wall street journal instead. :flower:

Case Studies on Fashion

I am currently writing my thesis and I would like to incorporate a few aspects of fashion and fashion retailers (e.g. H&M, Zara, Topshop).
Do you have links to studies that examine fashion trends and/OR the big retailers like Zara etc. how they work?
I would appreciate that a lot!

Hi everyone! Do you know where can I find some general informations about fashion magazines (InStyle) ? I mean when was it founded, by who etc? ^_^

I just Googled "history of InSTyle Magazine and found these links all of which talk about their history. These two resources will probably have other major fashion magazines in addition to InStyle.

Wikeipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InStyle

MyFashionDataBase: http://www.myfdb.com/companies/803-instyle

If you are interested in their current stats and management, magazines usually put out a media kit on their own corporate site: http://www.instyle.com/instyle/static/advertising/mediakit/instyle/mission.html

I hope it's OK to put my question here, since we don't have a thread yet and I find it unnecessary to open it just for that purpose.
So, as a graphic designer I am currently working on a website for a client. Usually the photos used for it are stock photos of any kind, but I am wondering if it's illegal to use a (cropped) photo from some fashion editorial or are they somehow copyrighted?
I know that theey are seen multiple times in different media/forms and even reproductions.

Would be very thankful is someone would informed me about this issue. :flower:

one easy thing you might do is put a tiny © Mario Testino (for example)
or use the copyright clearinghouse center and licensed images to use...

All photos should be considered copyrighted by the photographer ... since the photographer is the creator. If it's an editorial, the magazine most likely has purchased full copyrights or possibly exclusive user rights from the photographer. If you or your client use them without written permission from the legal copyright holder it would be considered a copyright violation and they can sue for their usage fees.

To be honest ... I believe just crediting the copyright owner would not give your client the right to use the photos. You still did not obtain permission or purchase usage rights to those photos. So .... yes ... user rights to any photos should be purchased from either a stock house, clearing house or directly from the photographer and/or magazine, if they are not offered as stock photos. And this is especially important if your client is a commercial enterprise that will make money from these images .... potential demands for payment and lawsuits.

Here is a link to information about copyrights that seems to explain it in more detail, and if you are creating web sites for customers, you need to know inside out, to protect yourself and your clients: http://www.chillingeffects.org/copyright/faq.cgi

What constitutes unlicensed copy and display of copyrighted material?

Answer: Unlicensed use or distribution of copyrighted works is illegal and may be considered a criminal act. Copyright law grants the exclusive right to use, copy, distribute, display and perform a copyrighted work to the owner of the copyright. The owner of the copyright is the only entity that may grant permission for anyone to use, copy, distribute, display and perform the work.

How Internet is influencing luxury industry ?

Hello everyone ! I'm writing my thesis on differences between mass market brand and luxury brand in terms of digital exposure , do you think there is distinctive line which defines how much luxury brand should be ' digitally visible ' ? I would love to know your opinions ! thank you !

Does anyone of you guys know if the french word "styliste" mean "stylist" or "designer"? I'm looking for jobs in France and I'm not quite sure.

I'm in huge need of Canadian people, haha.
I'm studying American Studies, but the fact is that, as you suppose, mostly everything is about USA, now it's the second year and we finally focus on other coutries :) I have to write an essay (there is a list of 40 topics like immigrants in Canada, Olympics, Case of Quebec, Canadian Army etc.) but I don't want to just make a random choice. I'm not really aware of whole Canada stuff, but I want to change it immediately! So if you're Canadian then let me know if you want to help and write me via pm or any social media, I won't bite, I'll ask you some questions about your country and problems and what specific problems r hidden behind those topics :)

Nurses inspired fashion

Hi, I'm doing a homework for my styling class about the role of nurses and how designers and stylists use elements of their outfits in fashion. Do you guys know of any editorials and collections nurses inspired?

Google the LV nurses runway show; not sure if they inspired the whole collection or just the presentation of it, but it was a great show. :)

ETA: Here we go, from theguardian.com:

John Galliano was inspired by S&M for Dior HC F/W 2000 and did a scary nurse outfit out of a child's nightmare.
