Porter #26 Summer 2018 : Karlie Kloss by Camilla Akrans

I don’t have that many issues with Karlie as a model, but her connections are.... unsavory, to say the least. But if Porter likes it, I love it. I’m never buying this magazine anyway.

If the only critisicm to be laid at a person’s door is that they’re too nice, or try too hard, then hey, they’re doing pretty well in my book.

I like her personally, she is very enthusiastic and keen it’s true but it just seems genuine to me. She never seems to be putting anything on so for me it’s nothing really to be too bothered by.

I do sort of disagree on the high fashion front. Whilst she might do very commercial work well, she can very easily do more high fashion work too. She’s just a good model to me, period. An all-rounder.

Exactly!!!! I disagree with everybody else, Karlie as you said is a true true high fashion top model and she has been working in HF for yearsssss so it´s amazing to see her being still this HF girl and now becoming in fact a true powerhouse. By the way that´s the road to sucess: Tyra, Heidi, Cindy started in HF and then became commercial hits and whether some of you don´t like them these 3 superstars are known by people all over the world and have business savvy. Karlie understood the game. That´s how the supers of the 80-90´s managed to stay relevant in the fashion and entertainment industry = they developed and spanned out. She is here to stay, she does coding, her brand with cookies and still models amazingly. I don´t see this photo being too cropped up or zoomed in. It´s a beautiful beauty shot that works here. I like her personality and yes she is genuine. I am sorry I would take Karlie over Gigi or Kendal or boring robotic Bella ANYDAY B)

Amen! I completely agree with everything. She has been working her *** of for the last 10 years! And she is still going strong ❤️

Yep I agree with you both, as well. She's an Icon already and deservedly so.

Also this cover is GORGEOUS it would stop me dead in my tracks at a newsstand. Love it!

If the only critisicm to be laid at a personÂ’s door is that theyÂ’re too nice, or try too hard, then hey, theyÂ’re doing pretty well in my book.

Agreed, I'll take that over the whole "too cool to care about anything" nonsense that fashion consistently pushes. How dare someone be conscientious and upbeat, the nerve!

The picture is very fresh, though I might have liked a full body shot better it seems very close and I'm curious about the outfit.

Yeah, I definitely don't think Karlie needs to justify hf career. The thing is now though her look has changed and the kind of shots she used to be able to pull off easily just don't work as well anymore. This is a prime example of that, though I'm pleased to see Camila Akrans book another cover and I'm hopeful for the editorial!

I actually quite like this, very fresh and crispy. She knows what to give when to produce the shot

She look stunning but thats it. It Feels like OK Magazine (like British Vogue these days)

I am mostly happy to see Camilla land another cover. It's good to see Karlie as well, can't wait to see what they did together.
The cover itself is very beautiful and out of all magazines, I still always have the highest hopes for Porter as far as content is concerned.

Not the worst cover, not the best either, but Karlie's HF career is not impressive? What a joke; decade + of blue chip ad campaigns, runway work, and total top covers.etc, yet here she is in 2018 still getting covers, and work. Not even a fan, but very easy to dismiss someone's work, doesn't make it true though!

^ replying to posts that were never made doesn’t make them true either.. I said she’s “done it all in paper”, which is exacly what you listed and yet, gasp, I find her PR obnoxious, as everything the Kushners get behind, and hardly aspirational/impactful image-wise unlike the iconic careers she’s molding her TV personality and career after (Tyra, Christy).. the idea that I’m dismisisng her campaigns/shows or that ‘she’s too conscientious and upbeat’ is probably the standard way of simplifying modeling-related posts around here (I’m surprised no one has said hater ) since models generate the same irrational feelings of a football team, and also the laziest.. questioning somebody’s “brand” and the personality they develop in order to sell it should be completely normal when exposed and consuming entertainment.

As for the more innocent ‘oh but she’s been working hard for the past decade!’, I know that, I was one of the members that posted her first work in 2007. Working hard for a lot of years is life for most adults in this planet, who else has worked hard for decades? your least favorite politician, Simon Cowell, bloggers gone vloggers. Still in the public eye and with a whole machinery to stay relevant that comes with marketing strategies (which inevitably involve face and personality) that you CAN be critical about.

^ Wasn't replying to you directly, or i would have quoted you. Others did write that her HF career is nothing impressive, so obviously i did reply to post's that were made in this thread.

To be honest, i don't follow her outside of print, so really have no idea if she is annoying as you say, she could be. None of your arguments against her make me dislike her , and some do read as downright "hater" territory (comparing her work ethic to Trump, Cowell.etc is defo reaching. Has either of those really worked hard for decades? Or just sailed on their name, infamy, and PR made hollow brands? Whole other discussion, i guess....) But i 100% agree, that anyone with a public brand is not above criticism. I remember far worse things being written about Cindy, and Tyra. Not sure if Karlie's work will endure, but i think she has done some good print work in the last 11 years. The commercial projects she does are lackluster, most of the times, but i honestly think she can do HF very well. And I do agree that she will not reach the level of Cindy.etc

I will also take your detailed comments/criticism about why you dislike someone/something over just; "like it, or hate it" replies (which i am certainly guilty of), maybe if we had more members like you, TFS would be more active, like before.

And I'm intrigued now by her PR game, you make her sound like Blake Lively of the modeling world. Will defo keep an eye on her future projects.

.... you make her sound like Blake Lively of the modeling world. .

Lol, not quite. I think Karlie's on a different level. You have a self acclaimed St Louis smalltown girl who not only conquered the hf and commercial realms of the fashion industry, but became the best friend of the world's biggest pop star overnight, reaped the professional benefits of that friendship which included a Vogue cover, unfriended said pop star, and in a cold twist, casually hung out with her arch nemesis paired with subtle jabs. That is between working her way into high society and as a willing ally of the defacto Flotus. My head hurts thinking of all the strategy. Becky Sharp is alive and kicking! But you know, that's perfectly fine. It's the 1950's style smokescreen she's putting out whick irks me. Yet on the other hand, it clearly seems to be rather effective based on what I've read so far.....

The mere idea that Karlie is the second model after Natalia Vodianova to book two OG Porter covers, a rarity, is telling. We had Imaan Hammam as well, but her first one was shared. Karlie may have more in common with Natalia than I thought.....

YESSSSS!

I can tell you're up to date with updates from the offshore world, the fashion forecaster gone Bannon servant, the oligarch's slow Kremlin PR within fashion and thus know how the [Karlie] cookie crumbles. Thank you.

Miss Dalloway, it only takes one youtube video (which unleashes daily recommendations without necessarily subscribing).. plus the TV presence, what the content targets, image and the math is done.

I actually think 'hard work' is subjective unless you're in construction/janitor/agriculture services, but waking up every morning at 6 am and having a job that mostly consists of delegating and choosing which advice to take can still be hard work, having minimal tasks but cramps/headaches is super hard work. It's a whole topic indeed, lol.

I'll settle with the heart and social awareness of Blake Lively, the perseverance and eyes on Silicon Valley of Miranda Kerr.

(thanks btw, always down for a little debate haha).

I like Karlie. Despite her decrease in HF skill, I still remember when she rose to the top of her game. She was the girl of the moment. She was muse of John Galliano fronting so many Dior campaigns. She was Anna's favorite and Meisel loves her. She brings life to any jumping shoots with boring grey backdrop. When she transitions to VS angel, I knew that she would have something in mind for a long run and when she decided to leave VS, she already becomes popular on her own. Of course being best friend with Taylor during her biggest album was a strategic move for both of them. Taylor needs connection to HF and Karlie needs to expand her fanbase. But that because we know her before she became a supermodel.

Today, they see her as a powerhouse, a business women and someone who brings a much needed change to tech world. She knows that being famous and hanging out with rich and famous would bring her money but those who last forever are the ones who steps out of fashion and entertainment and start doing something of their own. And that's what I like about her.

I used to like her as a model, but for whatever reason ( i had no idea that she has a new “career”) I think she lost it. I do not think her looks and demeanour are quite right anymore for the fashion role people want her to play. Which in itself it’s quite strange, when good models get a bit older, their appearance usually gets more intense, not less interesting like in her case.

I like a few shots (especially second to last one) but overall it's a little on the boring side.
Any news on other content, does anyone have the issue by now?

It’s not a bad ed, but I miss the usual Akrans polish. It almost looks like she was trying to emulate Ryan McGinley in some shots.
