Pricing-New Designer Vs Established Designer

ALL i know is chanel is worth everypenny....
basically smaller desginers have to overpay for the products being made so they also overcharge you to make profit.
BUT there stuff holds out better than LV no matter hwo fancy there boutiques are......OR JUICY COUTURE PANTIES.....those are jsut plane gross...
espeically when my friend says she lieks to wear them so her boyfriend thinks she buys expensive panties....HELLO there not worth the money!!!

i agree... chanel are the best hand-me-downs my grandparents gave to me!!

I've really enjoyed reading through everyone's replies on this thread. As a 'wannabe' designer who has decided to go through both a fashion design and business degree, its interesting to see how everyone reacts to a new designer's prices... and i agree with many points made here.

If I were to take some $20 target shirt and throw some fabric paint on it, then charge $200 for it, to be honest I would be stick to my stomach. Where is the design in that? The originality? I mean thats most of the fun in design.. creating something beautiful from scratch, deciding on fabrics, materials, techniques, making sure that the fit is just right and it looks and feels beautiful.

I know I have really been considering this lately, even though I have a few years to go with my degrees. To me, I would rather charge higher prices to pay to get the garments made with an established, incredible quality Italian manufacturer and pay for the shipping and costs involved (Which, when you live in Australia, is a LOT of money) than have it lose the quality having it made by a dubious manufacturer here in the Asia Pacific. Half of the reason behind this is because I'm vain and I don't want something of mine to turn up with buttons falling off and threads pulled here, there and everywhere.

Thats just me anyway :flower:

I don't know if this is interesting but I look at the fashion shops around Auckland - here it's all about the small designer. Anyway I generally find the quality of the clothes to be terrible. They use flimsy cottons and still charge $400-500NZD. I saw one skirt half made with denim, the other half with cotton retailing for $450. I thought the skirt was cute but not enough for that price. .

Ugh, i know. That's what I find frustrating here in Australia. I mean, I know of designers who have items sold for $900 here in Australia (which rarely has a x3 mark up... generally mark up is more like x2) and the items of clothing only cost $50. The designer isn't spending on marketing (haven't seen ANY PR/Advertising/Magazine appearances lately), the fabric, while being silk, is terrible quality, and the finish has a lot to be desired!

The of course there is the batallion of aussie designers and the $500 cotton dress that looks like a sack on with a bit of embroidery..

Makes me soooooooooooo mad
