primarks - yay or nay?

I was talking to a clothing designer the other day - she hates them - they don't have a design team, the buyers just buy stuff and send it to the factory to be copied.

I have a love hate relationship with primark. I love that you can get such cheap stuff there, and I get really excited about finding bargains, but this enthusiasm dies as soon as I go to the cash desk and have to wait like 3 years. Plus all the charva scum-bags with their gold chains and rockports and 7 kids each do make me want to ***********, or them.

But all in all, I think you can get some good stuff there, I got some great bikini's for £5 :woot: , but mostly I have just their basic vest tops. I refuse to pay £10 for some of the basics in topshop when you can pay £2-4 in primark, theyr about the same quality too.

The Times Style magazine had an article on them in Sundays issue, they showed some of the new season stuff and it looks pretty good. If its good enough for Style, its good enough for me!! I guess with any cheap shop you just have to have the patience to wade through all the crap, they have gone SERIOUSLY overboard with gypsy skirts this season

They use Topshop as their design resource - buy it in Topshop, copy it. It works out cheaper than Topshop because they use factories in China and they don't have to pay a designer to do it.

I wonder if when they will start getting sued by the companiers they copy from? I design for another high street chain quite often (I'm freelance) and they are very careful not to copy stuff because they know they will get sued and it wipes out their profit.

they do make carbon copies of things you see in other shops...but what can you do?
they're still gunna sell them even if you don't buy them

They're terrible for copying other shops, Monsoon are suing Primark for copying their designs.

I don't find this surprising at all

a shop in the UK that up until less than a year ago was VERY unremarkable. It has recently started to become a little more fashion forward in it's designs and is getting a lot of media attention in certain fashion magazines because it's stuff is so cheap. It does copy other stores (i.e. topshop, monsoon) but when you think about it, they just copy designers stuff. it's good for the budgeted consumer, because even though topshop is high street I wouldnt call it cheap. Not everyone can afford £40 for a pair of shorts

I've got a few basic bits from there but I wouldn't buy anything important there as their stuff can look kinda tacky.

I read in an article in the newspaper that primark is the top selling high street store for 2005 its sales are higher then topshop etc.
I like it for cheap basics, there pj's and underwear and cheap tank tops and tees. It is ok for basics imo. I wouldnt buy my whole waldrobe from there.
Imo it has certainly gotten alot better in the last year, it is now a regular in all the magazines along side topshop etc.
I have the above mentioned milletery jacket in blue and black and I have seen it featured in every magazine I buy. It was such a bargain imo.
I think that primark is great for those who dont have much to spend but want to buy cheap wearble fashionable clothes.

i've just been to the new primarks in leeds and its amazing, the manaquins are just like topshop, 3 floors, and lots of new stock and it was very very busy, and the manager of the leeds Harvey nichols was in there

sorry to bring this thread back up but I have some (possible) bad news for you primark lovers..... the distribution centre for Primark down the lane from me is on fire! currently hiding under a big polyester ploom of smog! Pretty sure it's primark anyway. This is great news for men, their clothes were disguistingly below average, not so great for women though!
