Princess Mary of Denmark

I mean I don't know a ton about the royals, but I would assume that a lot of the bitterness about the fashion would come from the fact that she has the fashion industry as one of her causes, but she buys more pieces from international designers than she does Danish. Forgive me if I am wrong...that is just the interpretation that I am getting.

Bogan is an Aussie slang term-I can't really describe it myself but there's a wikipedia entry on it. It's a lot different than a chav, I can tell you that much.

You're not wrong, that is exactly the problem. Now that she's chosen to endorse the Danish fashion industry, she can't be a hypocrite. Especially, because this is a way for her to actually make money, by advertising for the Danish fashion industry.

Yes, the royals gets a certain amount of money every year, and it's generally watched over what they spend it on. That doesn't mean, the average citizen doesn't get ticked off, when they work hard for their money which is then frivolously spent on designer clothes for Mary. It is true, that the royals do need clothes for the extravagant affairs they attend, but there's a little thing called tact. And it really isn't fun to read in your morning paper, that Mary just went on a shopping excursion where she spent 50.000 DKK a day.

So true! I would be outraged too.

That is, what? A couple of thousand dollars A Day?

But how can she spend all that money and still manage to look so spectacularly boooring?

I wonder what Caroline of Monaco would do with all that money...

Mary has terribly sun-damaged skin. I've seen her in real life at an official do and she was wearing the thickest foundation I have EVER seen. This beach photo gives an indication of how discoloured her face is - despite a $1 million makeover. Like many Aussies, she looks at 36 the way a Scandinavian woman won't look until her 50s. She already looks a lot older than Fred.

LOL Ginny I'd love to hear more!! what else did you see about her? what colour is her hair? it really puzzles me. in some photos it looks black , in others dark red..it's ever changing..
I can tell from photos that her legs have white spots and her arms do too, and she still has lots of sun damage on her chest. but i can't tell with her face because there's always TONNES of foundation on her, at all times!!
do tell us more :)

I couldn't see her hair well as it was back & under a hat. She was wearing a hideous wide-brimmed hat, black & white, and a sort of shapeless cotton-weave coat thing with ermine-esque fleaspecks on it. She was sweating through the foundation, which was too pink for her rather sallow complexion. She has poor posture, which made the coat more shapeless. (nb she was only about four weeks pregnant at the time I think). I don't know where the 'fashion icon' thing came from - she did not have a pleasant or charismatic vibe AT ALL. I think she wasn't bothering much with the occasion, which was very rude. A real royal can smile and engage in any situation. Mind you, she sure is photogenic - either that or she's ruthlessly airbrushed.

ohh was she rude? i heard she can be really snobby to the press and functions, why do they still love her? what did she do? she pains me really, being a fashion icon isn't about parading Prada, the Danes can't be that Naive!

Some of the latest comments reek of Royal Dish. Mary's style, if one wants to call it that, is way too trendy for my taste. However, her choices are not as bad as some believe in my opinion. Now Marie Cavallier, the lazy golddigging princess & her sister in law, has no style nor class at all. What a joke.

what's royal dish? yeah Marie seems like a gold digger too, and i agree they have no class ..i like some of Mary's style but it's not hers, its her stylists.

I've got the same impression. I don't know if her background is "bogan" or not but it certainly wasn't high class which makes it feel very fake whenever she appears looking like someone who stepped out of a British manor. Add to that a tendency to say rather silly things and the result is IMO not that charming..

I've been hearing people call Mary a "bogan" for a while now and I decided to look the term up. It says that it's the Australian equivalent to the US "white trash" or "hillbilly." Now I know Mary wasn't born or raised rich but she certainly was not poor, her father is a very smart Professor who has a PhD and BSc in mathematics, he taught at the University of Australia as well as Oxford, Houston, South Korea and now at the University of Copenhagen and University of Aarhus. Her mother was also very smart as well. And her sisters and brother don't seem to be doing too bad ones a geologist, the other a pharmacist and another a nurse. These don't sound like children from a "white trash" background.
Mary herself did very well in school graduating from the University of Tasmania with a combined degree in Commerce and Law. She also worked with global advertising agencies. This still does not sound like someone who is "white trash."
As I said before, Mary wasn't rich growing up but seemed to be very upper middle class (which most people are these days, insert Miss Waity Katy Middleton's name here), she had a few good steady jobs and seemed to carry herself well while dating Fred, now she is crown princess and it is a big adjustment from commoner to princess. She does need to dress and act the part, which can probably be a little tiresome at times. Now I have never met her so I can't judge her demeanor like some of you that have but from what I have seen, she dresses like a modern day princess to me. And she seems to be very nice and cares about her patronages. I do have a feeling Mary lost a bit of herself when becoming a princess but that is hard not to do when the expectations are so high. If she was still running around in khaki pants and sneakers and riding her bike most people on this thread would be in an uproar. Saying she's not doing her job properly or dressing properly etc. Give the woman a break, she may not have been born with a silver spoon in her mouth but she certainly isn't white trash. I believe she's trying her best while being a princess, mother, wife, sister, aunt etc.
If some people on here are so quick to give some royal girlfriends who do nothing all day the benefit of the doubt ALL THE TIME, then it should be easy to do for Mary. I'm just saying.....:innocent:

LOL I agree.^
Just to recitfy^^Ashcottmanor i actually have a friend who's sister knew Mary when she lived in Bondi and she was nothing like the upper middle class, that is funny. The great jobs she had in advertising were thanks to Fred's connections..and she had a reputation aroudn the eastern suburns as something I'd rather not say. That's why when she comes to Sydney , the only people she hangs out with are Fred's real estate friend who is also her old boss, and her old friends from Melb who visit.

The 'upper middle class' in Sydney dont' give her the time of day, and being from Tasmania, I'm sorry but in Australia you would never call someone upper middle class if they lived in country Tasmania, take that from an Aussie! hehe cruel but true.

No one is saying that 'bogan' = white trash. You can have educated bogans, but they are still bogans. It's hard to explain in US slang :)

I admire her determination and the way she transformed herself. I love her style and I thinks she's very clever to be where she is now. she has great stylists though. I love the Prada and Boss stuff she wears.
