Princess Mary of Denmark

LOL I agree.^
Just to recitfy^^Ashcottmanor i actually have a friend who's sister knew Mary when she lived in Bondi and she was nothing like the upper middle class, that is funny. The great jobs she had in advertising were thanks to Fred's connections..and she had a reputation aroudn the eastern suburns as something I'd rather not say. That's why when she comes to Sydney , the only people she hangs out with are Fred's real estate friend who is also her old boss, and her old friends from Melb who visit.

The 'upper middle class' in Sydney dont' give her the time of day, and being from Tasmania, I'm sorry but in Australia you would never call someone upper middle class if they lived in country Tasmania, take that from an Aussie! hehe cruel but true.

No one is saying that 'bogan' = white trash. You can have educated bogans, but they are still bogans. It's hard to explain in US slang :)

I admire her determination and the way she transformed herself. I love her style and I thinks she's very clever to be where she is now. she has great stylists though. I love the Prada and Boss stuff she wears.

Well perhaps I don't know what it means or how it is used in Australia because I am an American. Thanks for filling me in on your friend's, sister's info. I still think she looks lovely and tries hard. She may not be perfect but she'll get better with time. :flower:

References to Mary as 'bogan' are in jest and an exaggeration - but there is a grain of truth in there. Mary has multiple ear piercings and hung out with a pretty rough crowd in Sydney before she met Fred. Why do you think Fred took to her? By way of contrast with his aristocratic pals. Her housemate Andrew Miles is an advocate for workers in the sex industry. Which is not to imply that Mary was a sex worker. Her father is a second-rate academic at best. There is no family money. Mary's first live-in boyfriend founded a company with her called "Exciting Alternatives" and another called "Cash King". Sounds a bit white trash wannabe to me! But the most telling aspect of Mary is her choice of best friend. Her best friend recently posted her D average school reports online as a boast. Not what you'd expect from the best friend of any high achiever. Her bestie also managed to scandalise the Danes by 1. hanging out with a Bandidos bikie who was murdered two weeks later; 2. having a bitchfight in a rough pub; 3. stealing a man from his wife when she had a two-month old baby; 4. denigrating Mary's mother-in-law, the Queen of Denmark. All very well that that's Mary's friend and not Mary, but it just illustrates that Mary has indeed elevated herself VERY considerably, and doesn't have much intellectual vigour or prowess - what you'd want, I would have thought, in a modern princess. Her fashion style is pretty mediocre - she wears very high heels and carries off a few styles, but not many. She is quite photogenic and would be very pretty in real life without the Spakfilla all over her face. She is ridiculously pale for an Aussie - wears foundation five shades too pale. It's a shame she doesn't relax into an unpretentious presentation; she comes off as stiff and wannabe. The circles she needs to impress - royals, and ordinary folk - are not the ones she is targeting. She is pretty clueless for a PR professional ...

How many people are really that smart though? Unless you were born royal and had the best education money could buy, normal beings are not geniuses. And if she is trying to connect with the common man, wouldn't she want that? I've found most highly intellectual people don't have the social skills to be mingling with normal society anyways, so where is the trade off? You're damned if you are and damned if you aren't.
And you say she's too pale to be an Aussie? What about Nicole Kidman? She looks ten shades lighter than Mary, Aussies can't be pale? Also I have nothing against paleness, it just goes to show that one might be looking after their skin and not wanting to end up looking like Donatella Versace someday. I guess I am one of the few here who actually like most of her style choices. She does wear some things that I cringe at but mostly I think she tries to dress for her persona and being a modern princess, well thats some big shoes to fill.

I take your point, but Nicole K is naturally pale, while Mary's skin is quite brown underneath the foundation. Yes, it's sundamage - sunspots and discoloration - but Mary is simply not pale. Wherever her foundation is smudged, there's brown complexion showing underneath. I very much liked Mary's early, voluptuous girl-next-door look, much more than the current vitiligo/Morticia/Goth aesthetic.

Gee Ginny, you seem too really dislike a person you do not know, what's the issue??
As for the "bogan" thing, I too looked it up and Mary and her family certainly are well educated and would appear to be middle class people not white trash or chavs. Her father is a professor and Mary has a double degree, to me that would seem to make her at the very least middle class. Who cares whether her best friend got D's at school LOL, that was a long time ago and since this friend obviously lives in Australia and has nothing to do with Denmark, why the issue? I can understand you being upset if this girl was married to the Prince. As far as I can tell Mary has no scandals in her past which is much better then some other princesses in Europe.
I agree with Ashcott, Mary is doing a good job and dresses like a modern princess. I like her choice of clothes for the job she does and I think her skin looks quite glowing and smooth.
It is a shame that some people get jealous of other women especially if they do well in life. Good for Mary, she was just an ordinary Australian girl who now is the Crown Princess of Denmark, she has a gorgeous husband, 2 lovely children and an enviable lifestyle! I say half her luck

Hmmm I'll have to study the pictures closer before when she wasn't married to Fred. I always thought she was very pale, could it be because of a climate change too? Do they get a lot of sun in Denmark? And I see what you're saying about her dress, she can be very serious and dark at times. I loved her red Opera gala dress she wore the night before her wedding. I wish she would wear more gowns like that. And please don't take offense to my comments I am simply asking questions to learn why some people think of her the way they do, since my opinion is not quite the same. There is no bad blood here on my end!:flower:

We get a lot less sun than in Australia for sure ;) Mary does however always seem to be very, very cautions of the sun with big hats and large sunglasses. She seems very protective of her skin. There's nothing wrong with that of course but in Denmark it does seem a bit extreme as she is no longer exposed to as much sun as she was Downunder. She's very much paler now than she was when she lived in Australia.

^ Thank you for the info :) I appreciate it. The paler skin does clash a bit with her dark dress. I liked the purple outfit though, she should wear more of that color. But to make her look not so pale she should wear soft colors.

Jewel-colours suit her very well, I think. She tends to wear a lot of black which I think is a bad idea. I don't know if she just prefers black like the rest of us or it's her stylists idea but I think it's a shame.

Agree with you

I agree. But I don't actual like her as a person though I don't actually know her so my opinion doesn't count for much. But my impression of her isn't good. The same with the former Princess Alexandra. I recently saw an interview of Alexandra, and she works very hard at saying the "right" things. I actually believe that Mary is less fake than she is, and she or rather her stylists certainly dress her better. I quite like Mary's style but I wouldn't say there was anything special or particular about it. It's neat and nice, she looks good. That's pretty much it. I think though, that with Mary she seems like a pretty empty shell. She is pretty and shallow, but not terrible bright. Sure kudos for scoring Frede but other than that, I'm not impressed by her credentials. Alexandra however, she a smart woman, I'm pretty sure about that. I just don't like her very much either, because she's terrible fake. Why couldn't we have gotten someone like Spain's Letizia? Oh well, we Danes love to complain about everything. If we had gotten Letizia, we would probably complain over her too :p

^ No you actually have a right to complain. You are in the thick of it, as they say. I think what they're taught to act like as a royal plays a big part of it. All the aids telling them how to act and what to say. I actually liked when Diana ignored her aids and did as she pleased. It got her in trouble more than once but at least she was herself. That's what made the people like her. Maybe Mary should try that too. There are new pics at e blogspot I saw, where MAry is wearing a black dress I will try to post them. I think the white jacket looked good but the dress was too dark. I would have liked to see her in something festive like red or green.

I think the people liked Diana because she seemed genuine. Mary doesn't come across as genuine in her charities etc. It's more like it's her duty she's doing all these charitable things. And it is her duty, it's what I pay her to do ;). But if she at least seemed interested and genuinely cared about doing these things, I would like her more.

Far from it kikiie - her bestie has been the bane of the Danish royal family, having turned up in Denmark several times and courted a great deal of publicity. Last time she phoned the radio station where she works and betrayed the Queen by referring to a private social occasion and the Queen's smoking - implying that the Queen is friends with her. Her trip was cut short and she suddenly left Denmark for London, when the Danish press reported it. She had boasted about very unsuitable behaviour at a party in Denmark. I don't think she is welcome at royal events any more. She had been bridesmaid at the royal wedding - and got drunk and had very harsh words to say about the Queen's taste - having been a guest of the royals before the wedding! I assure you, the 'best friend issue' is alive and well in the Danish press from time to time! Mary has few friends of her own in Denmark and it is a shame the several attempts to hook her up with nice people haven't worked very well, and she is still relying on 'bestie'.

^that's true i remember an article in the paper about the radio station being made to take off the podcast from their website, of Amber ringing in to talk about Fred's 40th! lol it was pretty funny.
It's odd that despite all this ..Mary's one and only bestie from Oz is this total bogan Amber, but you know the saying 'show me who your friends are and i'll show you who you are'
however, you'd hope that Mary could teach Amber a thing or two about style ;)

Always nice to see pics of my favorite royal! She looks great and does a wonderful job for her charities. :D

It's not a flattering pic, and the foundation is too pink, but I still prefer the 'old, natural' Mary ... as we all know, sun damaged skin can still look stunning if the person who has it has a great attitude, is having a great life, and is surrounded by good company ... if I were given the choice between having fun-loving Mary Donaldson over for dinner, and Princess Mary, I'd choose the former for company!
