Punk

But when she started out in Punk she wasn't big, so some probably could at first. It is a bit ironic that through punk she became big, part of the establishment.

I have a pair of bondage pants. I always wondered where they originated. Thanks for the info.

and I totally agree with what you said about people starting to get into it just for the rebel look. This kinda people just truly have no idea what punk is all about, but they wanna dress like punks cause it looks cool or something...

And here's a few pics of my favorite of all time... The Clash:heart:

OH MY!!!! A fellow brazilian Clash lover!!!!! That rocks or what?! :bounce:

I read your post about your dad and how he started the punk movement in Brazil. Now I'm curious - who is he?:woot:

Answering to the original poster, I'd recommend the documentary on The Clash "Westway to the World" and Caroline Coon's seminal work "1988", an objective yet wide scoop on the blossoming british punk scene. Also check All Music Guide for more info.

A lot has been said so I'll just drop my two cents. Punk is not about anarchy, just because Johnny Rotten yelled it to death it doesn't mean it encompasses the whole of the punk ethics. If you take a serious look at the Clash and the Ramones' lyrics - just to name the two most important bands to come out of the movement - you'll see more of a political, humanistic stance than just youthful rebellion. Of course one can't be dead serious about the whole movement all the time but neither can we simplify its essence.

And the clothes, the whole punk "look", were an outlet for their views and opinions.

And to Brazilian Girl - I have a website dedicated to The Clash, it's called Last Gang In Town. I'd love if you checked it out. ^_^

Nemova, that is so cool!!! :woot:
I PM'd you, check your inbox :flower:

Oh, I've seen Westway to the World, it's really good. I love the scenes from the shows and the interviews, being able to hear their story from their own mouths. I even shed a tear with what Topper Headon said at the ending... heh

The final scenes of the documentary are so - prompting... and Don Letts is so mean, he makes it even worse by playing "Straight to Hell" on the final credits.... I've watched it so many times and I still get emotional over it.

The Clash were so good it hurts. They're one of the few bands whose poster still stays on my wall. I've 'grown up' a bit and gotten tired of the punk look but it amazes me to see how many punks talk down on fashion whereas they're just as conscious about what they wear as anyone on this forum! I may have retired my skintight pants and studded vests/jackets but I still keep my eye out for punk-inspired pieces like older DH, Nice Collective, Cloak.

Also, another band that had great style (albeit a bit more 60's hippie-esque) and influenced the start of punk greatly, The MC5! It's a shame that there don't seem to be any decent pictures out there:

Punk was/is a lifestyle, not just a fashion trend.

of course, but it's a trend in the fashion industry... ...as sad is it may appear to us..... it goes a bit against the "rules" of punk, i can't help but agree with you.... but the fashion industry takes inspiration from everywhere, like from the streets, so it's no surprise that a style as specific as punk is making it big.... (skinny pants, edgy black hair, distressed clothing, accessories...)

I had a mohawk for a while...It wasn't a punk mohawk but more sedated. My sister and her boyfriend are apparently "punk" right now but I think that's only because they wear drainpipes, don't pull them up all the way, flip the bird occasionally and forget to shower. Yep...pretty inspiring.
