Punk

I agree that it was something very unique and powerful. I wish I could've lived in the early 80's, when my parents were a couple of youngsters experiencing the rising of punk here in Brazil.

Nowadays there are many people who claim to be punk but I think they miss the spirit of it. They say "I'm a punk" and have like iPODs, myspace and stuff like that. These young people of today who claim to be punk don't really understand what it was like at that time, the real spirit of it, the ideal. It was a whole different thing. When you were a punk, you were a punk. My dad has great stories to tell about this time, and I love listening to them. I've always read a lot about the punk movement and heard a lot of stories etc, and that's the conclusion I came to when observing the behavior of these young people of today...

The punk movement was something that happened at that particular time, and althoguh we still have great punk music nowadays, and even a punk influence in fashion, the movement is dead because it just doesn't make too much sense in today's society. Or maybe it does but it was a whole other thing back in 1977.

As for punk style becoming mainstream, it is annoying to see everyone wearing the same thing trying to look "punk", (as it is annoying to see everyone wearing the same thing trying to look anything); but there are people who can still pull it off because they are truthful to the spirit, they live by it, their intention is not to follow a trend. Still, I don't think that the true punk style fits into today's situation of our society. Back then, combat boots and ripped pants and mohawks were shocking and making a statement. Now it's something we've seen a lot of, and it lost its pure meaning, its significance.

Ayways, I got carried away huh? I don't even know if I make any sense

As for me, I wouldn't say I'm a punk, but I certainly live by that spirit, it's just a part of my life and my ideals, as well as my musical and fashion taste :P

I've seen the documentary Punk: Attutide, which is about the birth of the punk movement, as well as it's developement throughout it's short life, and various other musical branches of it. A very enlightening and entertaining film, I highly recommend.!

This is the point, IMO.

Here's an interesting site: http://www.punk77.co.uk/linkpage/punkbands.htm
It's dedicated to all punk bands of the late 70's.

When i went to Europe a lot of the folks around my age (19-22) that i was running into were all about this movie. Haha got called out for wearing chucks, "You're from Chicago? Do you like Black Flag or Bad Brains?--OH Chuck Taylors, American HARDCORE!!!" >> me >>:shock::lol:B)
hehe... i still have to see this movie.

if punk is anything that can be defined it's just DIY... do it yourself thinking, style, and living.

anyway, it's funny how trends and culture are so fluid today and influence different ppls in different ways and all that bunk.

I like the way bands in the punk scene (in NY, London & Manchester) dressed over how lots of punk fans dressed (and still dress). None of the bands would put safety pins in their cheeks, wear black lipstick or have huge rainbow mohicans (for the most part). Lots just had an unkempt, diy rock 'n' roll look (like Richard Hell, The Clash, Patti Smith, Sex Pistols etc). And Talking Heads didn't have that look at all - I'd even call their style preppy.

Punk resented the commercialization of its existence and went deep underground. It's alive and kicking on both coasts of the US. When I see 'punk' products in boutiques, I cringe at attempt to sell punk culture.

I kinda like punk-elements worked into a look.. Acessories, tee's, boots or jeans perhaps, but just one "punk-item"

^ Is that a critique of punk and heroine chic? Sorry but I have a hard time keeping my trap shut. :flower:
