I agree that it was something very unique and powerful. I wish I could've lived in the early 80's, when my parents were a couple of youngsters experiencing the rising of punk here in Brazil.
Nowadays there are many people who claim to be punk but I think they miss the spirit of it. They say "I'm a punk" and have like iPODs, myspace and stuff like that. These young people of today who claim to be punk don't really understand what it was like at that time, the real spirit of it, the ideal. It was a whole different thing. When you were a punk, you were a punk. My dad has great stories to tell about this time, and I love listening to them. I've always read a lot about the punk movement and heard a lot of stories etc, and that's the conclusion I came to when observing the behavior of these young people of today...
The punk movement was something that happened at that particular time, and althoguh we still have great punk music nowadays, and even a punk influence in fashion, the movement is dead because it just doesn't make too much sense in today's society. Or maybe it does but it was a whole other thing back in 1977.
As for punk style becoming mainstream, it is annoying to see everyone wearing the same thing trying to look "punk", (as it is annoying to see everyone wearing the same thing trying to look anything); but there are people who can still pull it off because they are truthful to the spirit, they live by it, their intention is not to follow a trend. Still, I don't think that the true punk style fits into today's situation of our society. Back then, combat boots and ripped pants and mohawks were shocking and making a statement. Now it's something we've seen a lot of, and it lost its pure meaning, its significance.
Ayways, I got carried away huh? I don't even know if I make any sense
As for me, I wouldn't say I'm a punk, but I certainly live by that spirit, it's just a part of my life and my ideals, as well as my musical and fashion taste
