Well, the pronounciation is the same. Her name is originally writtin with the Cyrillic alphabet, and can be translated to Latin characters either way, i or y. It's an Arabic name meaning 'loving gaze' or 'lovely to look at'. How fitting (Tatars are not Arabs, but they are Muslim, so many have Arabic names.)

In reality, she is a classically beautiful Russian girl, in the mold of someone like Natassia Kinski, but Supreme have made her memorable by juzzing her up with a hairstyle and eyebrow bleaching that only a girl of her beauty can wear, and voila! she is edgy!

But really she is a classic beauty, for me she's like La femme nikita 'the french version ofcourse!

I was looking at the girl in the J Brand jeans ads today, wondering if she were Ranya.. I don't think she is, she looks older, but the similarity is striking especially since Ranya's haircut! Thing is though, when I first saw the ad and thought of Ranya I wasn't at all surprised to think I was seeing her in a campaign for a large brand. Here's hoping the real thing isn't too far away.

The correct meaning of Ranya or Rania in Arabic is "a girl who is thankful and happy with what she has", although in literature it also has other meaning - "lovely gaze" (the one you mentioned before). Interesting isn't it, how her name somehow fits her look?

Arabic is one of those languages whose words have complex, multi-layered meanings, so "loving gaze" can refer to "loving gaze towards someone", which is the same as "lovely to look at". And in Islamic culture, a girl's beauty is meant to be measured by her humility and modesty, so in that sense "a girl who is content, thankful etc." truly is "lovely to look at".
