His family just announced on his Instagram that he has died in France.

I'm in shock, didn't see that coming at all...one of my favorites.

This was posted on his Instagram account almost an hour ago. May he rest in peace!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Lindbergh on September 3rd 2019, at the age of 74.

He is survived by his wife Petra, his first wife Astrid, his four sons Benjamin, Jérémy, Simon, Joseph and seven grandchildren.

He leaves a big void.

What an incredibly sad news to wake up to. End of an era, loss of one of our biggest titans.

Peter was one of my all time favorites. No one was able to capture beauty and elegance in its purest essence quite like him. All his pictures felt immediately timeless, his lenses had the power to strip down his subjects of all artifices, and see them for who they really were. The pictures were so potent, yet so simple, so honest.

Rest in peace.

Rest in peace.

As terrible as it may sound, I need to get a copy of UK Vogue September as memory of his final work.

What’s going on with 2019!
All those amazing talents and personalities we have lost!!
RIP Master.
He was a great photographer and contributed to our fashion education to all of us, fashion lovers.

Very sad news...

Devastating news, I'm still in shock and disbelief. May he rest in peace.

I just saw the news. I’m shocked, sad... Rest in Peace

OMG... such sad news :-( My favourite Peter Lindbergh... RIP :-(

Rest in peace.

As terrible as it may sound, I need to get a copy of UK Vogue September as memory of his final work.

His final published Vogue cover will be the October 2019 issue of Vogue Arabia.

Wow, this is not the news i wanted to wake up to. He just exuded such great energy and charm. And what a talent, will be missed. RIP Peter, thanks for all the beautiful photographs.

This is almost too much to accept. For decades be brought so much beauty to this world through his photographs. And through social media, a glimpse of the wonderful spirit he was. This man was a true icon and will be missed in so many ways. RIP Peter.

I'm in complete shock. It seemed like he was working harder than ever, being back on so many big covers this year.
He always struck me as a true gentleman, always so humble, kind, and intelligent in his interviews.

Thanks for the many iconic photographs. RIP Peter

I am glad that I got to see the exhibition From Fashion to Reality in Munich a while ago. Seeing the iconic supermodels British Vogue cover on the huge wall was amazing. What a talent and what a great man he was.

RIP Mr. Lindbergh, a true gentleman.

"Lindbergh is an photographer that loves women, and he loves then in their totalitty. Fashion, for him, is a piece that attaches to his vision of women. He begins with the woman not with the dress." - Franca Sozzani

RIP

I woke up today not even 10 minutes ago, opened Instagram, and there the post was.

In absolute shock. I idolized his photography so deeply.... May he rest in peace. Such a talent, such a visionary, whose legacy will never be lost.

Like Lola posted, Peter contributed greatly to my education and how I viewed beauty and style. That brand of timeless beauty in the human form in its most simplicity and most effortless grace, that all the money and designer clothes in the world could never create. Peter instinctively captured in a shot true beauty of individuality.

Forever so grateful for his brilliance.

Fashion photography may leave a small room for spontaneity but his lens always captured the vastness of landscapes and eyes and unleashed the imagination of the viewer.. it was also education, not just in fashion, but human beings, what we consider beauty and what we neglect as ordinary. I learned to appreciate more the desert thanks in part to looking constantly at his work ..

I don't know what he was suffering from but I hope he's resting peacefully now and feels the gratitude of so many people.
