Do any of you have any advice for the prevention or treatment of rosacea?

My mum and aunt both suffer from this skin condition and i'm worried that i may be in the pre-rosacea stages. From what i have read it is incurable therefore i think preventing it may be the best option by far!

I searched the forum and there seems to be nothing on this particular topic. Any advice would be greatly appreciated:flower:

From my understanding theres no cure for it. However, weather conditions especially hot weather, stress and diet (hot spicy foods) may cause flare-ups. To lessen the chance of rosacea- avoid sunlight much as possible on the face, avoid any forms of heat to the skin, limited your stress and stay away from alcoholic and hot beverages. Theres something about the heat that causes rosacea to react. Also, you shouldn't wear heavy make-up. It will only clog your pores and cause your skin not to breathe and cause flare ups. Yeah, it won't be easy to do away with some of these habits. But your skin will thank you.
Also, look into a good dermatologist that will provide you with a non-alcohol water based solution to wash your face with.

my mother and my grandfather both have it. i hope im past the stage of possibly receiving it.

i think you should get a subscription to allure magazine. in ever issue it seems there is discussion about prescriptions for it.

I developed a mild form of rosacea about two years ago (when I was sixteen), but somehow, I was able to get rid of it. I'm not sure exactly what did it because I've changed so many things these past few years, including,

1. Turning vegetarian (lacto-ovo)
2. Eating all natural or organic
3. Using only natural and herbal skincare products
4. No makeup
5. Lots of tea and antioxidants
6. Shorter and cooler showers
7. And sunscreen! Everyday! I use a very high SPF with Mexoryl by La Roche Posay.

I still blush rather easily because I'm incredibly shy and fair-skinned. However, it's nothing compared to the flare ups I used to experience. It's a rather healthy pink in my opinion.

Rosacea is also in my genes, it seems. My grandmother has it. My mother has traces of it. My mom told me that she began experiencing rosacea-like symptoms after using the birth control pill when she was young.

Personally, from my own experiences, I think the synthetic chemicals in our foods and products have a lot to do with it. Rosacea may be how our body reacts to certain substances that don't belong there. My advice is to take care of your skin and treat it like porcelain. Don't use anything harsh on your face. I think I got my rosacea from using too much topical acne medication prescribed by my doctor (which didn't help my acne at all). It really thinned out my skin and made it really sensitive. I did a lot of research on the internet for a long time and eventually gravitated towards the natural/organic approach.

Thanks guys! I've been trying to really take care of my skin now like not sleeping in make-up. I never really thought i'd get it but i have always blushed really easily and it seems to be connected for some reason, not sure why.

I think my biggest issue is make-up. I try not to wear it too often but i want to sometimes. I think i'll have to investigate natural beauty products that are avaliable.

I have been avoiding caffaine recently and not eating bad foods and it has made a difference. I think i'll try going vegetarian like you winterise.

I've been using estee lauder advanced night repair concentrate and this seems to have diminished all signs of pre-rosacea!

Good to hear but you'll have to keep using it to avoid it from returning. I echo the advice already given-avoid spicy foods, extreme heat, and of course no matter your skin type, wear sunscreen.

My doctor recently told me that I have a mild form of rosacea. I need to search for a good moisturizer now- I have acne prone skin, but it's also dry (or oily at times). And of course, red. I think I might get the Estee Lauder advanced night repair concentrate, but I still need something good for a daytime moisturizer.
Anyone have any updates on their skin?

I just use olay sensitive usually and my skin is really good at the moment.

thats what i use too and it seems to work, also try chamomile tea as toner and a very gentle cleanser from cle de peau or the one from her sister company shiseido (cheap), and avoid spicy food and eat as natural as you can, also try to exfoliate once a week or every other week, even though they say is not good with kanebo silk peeling powder is great, make my skin glow!!!

i am using burt's bees radiance line (but for serum i am still sworn by Advanced night repair).

the progress is slow, but i swear those and ANR really makes my red face -aggravated by harsh cleansers and acne traetment- look a lot more normal.

Clinique has come up with a new skin care line specifically for Rosacea called Redness Solutions. I have been using it for a couple of months now and it appears to be working. I used another cream in the past by Neova called R2 Intense. It works as well...however, it is only a cream.

I've read that Dr Hauschka rose cream is good for rosacea... I think there was even an article about it in British Vogue...

My dermatologist recently told me that I had the onset of rosacea as well and prescribed finacea, which is newly approved. It also helps with my acne and the little left over scars. So far I really like it.

I also noticed that I always blush really easily (but I am pretty pale) and whenever I was in the sun when I was younger my face would turn bright red, while the rest tanned. Now I avoid the sun like no other and it has helped A LOT. I still have the blushing thing though.... it's so embarrassing :(

I know this is rather late, but to anyone on here who still kind of wonder about treatments.

I was diagnosed with a mild form of rosacea recently by the doctor although she isn't sure (going to a derm soon) and she prescribed me Metrocream. I have to say, its the best thing I have ever used. I think it's like $100-150 in the states - I have no clue, i live in Canada so I don't see a price ever.

Also, I found that eating certain foods, even if they weren't hot, like chips or basically anything really processed would make me break out into red bumps on my cheeks.

I guess just make sure to stay stress free and be as positive about the situation as possible

^_^

In the states, the equivalent is Metrogel.

Spicey foods, alcohol based toners and anything with a scent to it (for example eucalyptus type of products), can aggravate the rosacea.

Make sure you sunprotect, because rosacea has tendency to worsen when sun exposed.

I have never technically been treated for Rosacea however I have been told by doctors that I do suffer from it. I had always thought I was naturally red cheeked (I have never not had red cheeks) but once I started getting bumps it turned into a different story. So reading this thread has really helped me out a bit because I recognized a lot of my symptoms (such as it flairs up when I eat spicy foods, hot foods, ect.). Also I now know what to ask my derm next time I see him.
Although I do have one question... does anyone have any suggestions for a good toner/cleanser which wont flare up my rosacea? Also any other suggestions would be helpful too! :)

i would try:

http://www.lush.ca/shop/products/face/cleansers/fresh-farmacy <--- this gets rid of the bumps

http://www.lush.ca/shop/products/face/cleansers/aqua-marina <--- tones down the redness A LOT.

I would then follow it up with: http://www.lush.ca/shop/products/face/toners-toner-tabs/eau-roma-water <---- its a great toner for sensitive skin and reduces redness even more.

THENNN finish off with a moisturizer: http://www.lush.ca/shop/products/face/moisturisers/celestial

Sorry for all these . There is an american site if you are in the USA. Just go to lush.com
i use this skin routine and it cleared up my face more than metrocream.

Thanks so much Foreverandnone! This is really helpful and I will most certainly check these products out :)
