Searching for My Perfect Fashion Career - HELP!!

work in a PR company whose clients are in fashion. you get paid well and you get loads of free stuff. easy.

I'm actually interning at a fashion pr firm right now, haha, but thanks for the advice :flower:. It just seems kind of...mindless (of course, I am only doing typical intern duties, but this comes from observing everyone in the office). Maybe I am looking too much into it, it is only all fashion after all (regardless if it is PR or journalism, I'm sure writing about pretty dresses doesn't take a genius)...

^^ I can definitely empathise! Fashion PR is definitely.... yeah.... and doing events seems really glamourous but I found most of the so called VIP guests (I'm in Australia though so our VIPs are like everyone else's Z lists :P ) so tacky and just ergh, even though this was for an international luxury jewellery company's cocktail :S (on the same level as Bulgari)

i love fashion. i want a career in fashion. i want to put outfits together and travel around the world. what type of feild would i be good at?

well if you want to do that you would be a freelance stylist - a stylist puts outfits together, if you are lucky to have clients in different areas of the country and world. or you could just work for a magazine and sometimes fly to different areas of the cournty/ world for fashion shoots on location.

or you could be a diplomat^_^:P

do i need to go to school/college for that? if so, what degree?

not really, some go to schools or colleges, but you basically need to get some pictures of your outfits that you've assembled, and alot of on the job experience. if you look on the stylists thread here it goes into detail

I will be finishing up my B.S. in Music Industry Management (essentially a marketing degree with a few music tech/theory/history classes added) in May. Then, I am moving to Chicago to attend cosmetology school with a focus on make-up.

I was wondering, are there any jobs, specific to Chicago is a bonus, that I can work while attending school that have to do with the fashion industry? I'd like to be able to keep up on current trends/news in the industry as a whole, but I can't really commit myself to a "real" job while attending school.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome to tFS, Jessirs!

However ... I can't offer much help on your question other than working evenings and weekends in retail (or possibly working in with your school schedule) ... which is a "real" job because you must commit to the schedule.

But .... if you aspire to be a freelance makeup artist, you might start "testing" with newer photographers (find a photography shcool that has fashion photography classes and approach those students). There's no money in it but it's something you must do if you are heading towards a career in freelance makeup to build a portfolio and to learn what works and what doesn't. So it's never too early to get started. It's really the same thing that a fashion stylist must do (they work on the same team as an artist), so you might want to check in on the "How to become a Fashion Stylist" thread here in the Careers and Education forum which covers testing as well as a lot of other things that relate to makeup artists, too.

Thank you for the advice and the welcome! I was thinking retail would be my best bet, so I will probably stick with that. I will most definitely approach the photography students as you suggested!

I'm leaving the computer now so I didn't have the time to read through the thread so maybe someone asked before..but the photographers at the shows are sent there by?

magazines..style.com (I know that's not a company but..)..or are that random photographers

Yes .. your are about right ... magezines and websites, mostly.. If there are freelance photographers, then they will try to sell the pictures to publications who don't have their own photographers there. Then probably the stock photography companies, send their guys too so that they can sell images too.... companies like Corbis, getty etc.

What about ....

visual merchandising? ... which is store and window displays ... there's a thread about that, here.

Im a freshman in college, majoring in Retailing (but also taking many textile/apparel design classes for practical reasons!). I really am interesting in Fashion PR but dont think theres a market for the type I want to do here in the Midwest. (im from minneapolis, and go to school in Madison WI).

Question is: Would it be most helpful for me to look for internships in NYC and possibly move there after school? I want to get my foot in the door and tkae the best route possible...this job really excites/interests me!! Any advice/help is appreciated..thanks!

Just so you know, shopbop.com is based out of Wisconsin. I know your post is quite old (lol) but I just wanted to mention in attempts to help out at all for work possibilities ^_^

This is my 1st post here. I really love this forum!

So I'm taking Civil Engineering right now in school and I really don't think this is what I wanna do for the rest of my life. I'll probably end up finishing the program though, since I'll be graduating next year.

I just realized to myself that I'd like to pursue a career in the fashion industry. I really wanna work somewhere that'll alow me to dress well & fashion-forward. I don't know exactly what I wanna go into yet though, but something fashion related for sure.

I like math and I really suck at english (I don't hate it, I just suck at it). I also like arts. I took arts from elementary all the way until my senior year in high school. I wouldn't necessarily say I'm good at it, but I enjoy it. I had a portfolio, but I think I threw it out somewhere (bad mistake, I know). And I don't have any retail experience at all.

This is where I need some help. I don't know where to start off... Someone please shed me some light. TIA!

anyone in the fashion industry with an accounting degree? probably a stretch but who knows there might be someone here from internal audit? or someone who graduated with an accounting degree but still in the fashion industry? would really like to know as I don't want to be in public accounting forever

is anyone/does anyone know anything about being a runway coordinator?
I've always wanted to do fashion photography (I applied to Parsons for next year, hopefully will hear back soon!) but lately I've been thinking I might have some interested in designing runway shows (completely different, I know) but I'm having a hard time finding information about the different jobs that are available, what you should study in college, and how you get into it.
Any advice/information/help would be much appreciated!

Merchandising and also Buying both deal with number crunching and an accounting background is beneficial.

Here are threads about both of those professions:

Patternmaking as well. Very techinical job but a lot of work. Really good pay though. The average patternmaker makes around 150K a year.
