no, it's not smocked or gathered, it's darted.
if i smocked it, it would look rather cheap i find.
the way i darted it is like the way balenciaga darted their jacket. but of course, balenciaga darted it than i did mine was quick and cheaply done. also, balenciaga's dart is deeper than mine, which creates a better dimple than the ones on my sleeve

I just finished this for school. The lining is super soft and warm 100% wool and I guess good ironing wouldnt hurt.

Does anyone have any tips of sewing with knit fabrics?

What things to be careful of, avoid etc...

^^^ Ballpoint needles all the way. And a zigzag or stretch stitch unless you have a serger. knits tend to be very slippery so make sure you have good control over them. I would also suggest a walking foot so both layers feed into the machine at an equal rate.

I've been wanting to learn how to sew and make myself things since a couple of years ago but I got a sewing machine that wouldn't sew right on both sides and no one here could figure it out so I haven't been able to do anything. I've even considered just giving up and trying some hand sewing because if trying out the machine is never going to go anywhere I might as well even if it takes longer. I really want to be able to make myself some simple items that look and fit the way I want since it's not like I find much of what I want around here.

I just sewed this top, inspired by Miu Miu's spring '08 collection. I'm working on the skirt right now:

The back is my own design and the front is from a dress pattern!

It's really rough, as it's the second thing that I've ever sewn without any help, but at least I know what NOT to do when I remake the same outfit in black! ^^

^^ This is a really good attempt, however, here are some pointers for the black version:

Is this handsewn? There are puckered seams and I don't know if you want it to look like that.
The zipper is a big no-no. What look are your going for? Invisible, exposed, centered?
On top of that, the zipper is not properly installed. The zipper pull should be in line with the very top or 1/8" below the very top of your center back seam. The excess tape is supposed to be folded inside when you sew the zipper.

Also, your seam that it going across the back is not matching up at the zipper area, your right seam is higher than your left.

I really applaud your efforts and if you incorporate these directions, the quality will take it to the top!

thank you for the suggestions! actually, i'm working on redoing the zipper area because I made the back too small, but I have done zippers before!

The reason why the seams are puckered is because I made the lining the same size as the actual garment (apparently it's supposed to be smaller!). Also, I'm not used to working with slippery fabrics! But it is actually done with a machine~

made these recently the skirt and the dress are so simple and easy to make, just a bit of fun, just trying to get to grips with my machine so they are not too exciting! headband was hand sewn.

yesterday i bought some really nice material and tomorrow i'm going to have a go at making a skirt, with an elasticated waist. i have made a few things before, but only small things like hats and cushions in textiles at school, so i hope it turns out ok! i'm lucky thought because my mum is an excellent sewer and she can help me :]

Linings are supposed to be bigger, actually. Let me see if I can find the book where it explains all of this and I'll post it.
