Shanina Shaik

One of the highlights of yesterday’s lush Chanel‘s pre-fall show was the diverse cast. Amidst familiar Lagerfeld favorites like Arizona Muse and Stella Tennant a host of Indian & Pakistani beauties glided down the runway and caught our attention. Girls like Lakshmi Menon are already bonafide fashion stars, but the show brought a host of newer faces to the Grand Palais. Willowy beauties*Jyothsna Chakravarthy, Smita Lasrado, Kelly Gale looked elegant in Chanel’s gold and cream palette. Fresh from the brand’s beauty campaign, Alyssah Ali*traisped down the Chanel catwalk. Buzzed about beauty Shanina Shaik proved her versatility by pulling a complete 180 from her sultry Victoria’s Secret look. With her strong brows and refined look Liza Golden radiated classic beauty. Months after Vogue India labeled her the next supermodel Ashika Pratt hit high fashion’s big leagues.
When it comes to presenting a cast that represents the melting pot we all live in, fashion still has a long way to go. It is only in the past few years that brands truly began to embrace Asian models, but as beautiful as the women of South Asia are they are still a rarity on the runway. The theme of Chanel’s pre-fall collection dealt heavily with Indian influences and the casting attempted to reflect that, but out of 70 plus looks only a handful were worn by ethnic models. It remains to be seen if these young ladies will build on this momentum and dominate the catwalks next season, but we’re hoping this is the beginning of a moment.

There was also a photo with this article but I cant upload it right now sorry.

Helen thanks for the upload of the Intimissimi show - she looked sexy and gorgeous in that show. I hope to see her do more for them.

I didn't really like the Jason Wu photos but this has nothing to do with Shanina but moreso the makeup and the idea of bleaching her eyebrows - why???

I believe Shanina will prove alot more people wrong as she does more HF work - time will tell I guess.

Shanina is busy till xmas with work - can only imagine what's in store for her for 2012. She's come along way and I wish her the best as she deserves it! She has a unique look which is bonus.

Jason Wu didn't suit Shanina because she dosen't look good ugly. A lot of high fashion models look good with the bleached eyebrows as they can pull of ugly, Shanina is too beautiful to be made to look ugly. If she goes HF it won't last long as 2 common themes in Jason Wu and Chanel work is the Indian, Pakistan, Arabic trend. What happens when the trend is over? Will they want to book her? She needs to focus on getting a cosmetic contract I think.

Thank you helen-rox for the photos/videos ! xx I think no one suits bleached eyebrows.. period.

More chanel;

Dunno if this is over-analysing but I read some article (can't remember which website, sorry) about the implications of these Indian themes and how it could be because of the global financial crisis/European debt crisis that India, as well as China, is where the future big spenders of luxury brands are. So it might be just be a fad or maybe a bigger shift towards going where the money is... Not that I necessarily reckon there'll be heaps of Indian inspired collections, but if it means they'll want more girls who look like Shanina on the HF runway, I say yay.

And re eyebrows, I'm tempted to take one of the Jason Wu shots, photoshop some eyebrows back in and see how Shanina looks then. Her strong features are always gonna need brows.

Amazzing do you have any idea how long she will be in Australia for?

Shanina is returning to Aus to spend time with her family and rumour is Tyson is accompanying her. She has worked booked here and should be here till 2nd week of January 2012.

When is the VS store opening at Melbourne airport? If it is the same time Shanina is here I wonder if she would cut the ribbon at the opening

They said that there is no plans for an official opening event that Shanina or Miranda are going to attend because of some kind of advertising restrictions on duty free. But try did say it could be a last minute thing.

She had one look in the show and has never even shot for VS. If they even allowed a press event there, I doubt she'd be cutting any ribbons over the Australian angel that they already have. Like I could understand if she had been working with them but yeah... No.

^If Miranda was busy, Shanina could definitely do it. Yes, she has only done the show, but she has had a Lot of publicity since. I am sure we will see her in the catalogue soon, and hopefully some VS campaigns. Not sure if you have been to Melbourne airport, but the store being opened is not some big store like the US. This store will be primarily selling travel items with some lingerie. Like Helen said anyway, likely neither of them will be there.

When they opened the Sydney VS Travel & Leisure store they did it really quietly and no fanfare and it was the first time they opened a VS in Australia. So I'm expecting the Melb store to be the same ... I'm going through the Melb International Terminal next week will have a squizz and take a photo if I can ... :-)

Shanina could definitely do it.
The VS machine typically does not work that way. Shanina has zero ties to the company at the moment. There are models who have worked with them for years that don't even do launches, so I can't see how a model who had one outfit in one fashion show would be deserving of the honor. She might be doing interviews with the Australian press promoting herself to get some publicity, but that definitely doesn't make her worthy of doing an event representing the company.

I can't recall a single model in VS history that went from a grand total of zero catalog pictures to doing a launch. If she had that kind of miracle occur for her, then it would be an exception on the ultimate level, but she needs to focus on trying to get in the catalogs first. That's not even a given or a foregone conclusion. Quite a few models have done the show but have never done the catalogs.

It's one thing to have wishes of her being an angel one day, but you're kind of taking her from graduating day care on a Monday and entering college on a Tuesday.

^I don't expect her to become an angel anytime soon, but I do expect her to do more work for them within the next 12 months. She had a really good response from the show so who knows. I didn't expect her to ever walk for Chanel in her career, yet a month after the VS show she books Chanel. Nobody can predict the future, all we can do is hope of bigger things from her. She may never become an angel, but as a fan all you can do is cheer her on.

^ Brilliantly said Purpledinosaurxo!

Anyway, if the papers are to be believed, she will be shooting with VS this week :woot:

Model Shanina Shaik's career is taking off

AFTER landing a Chanel catwalk show and a lucrative Victoria's Secret campaign in the same week, Shanina Shaik's career has officially hit the major league.

The stunning 20-year-old Australian model strutted for the luxury fashion house's Paris to Bombay catwalk show on Tuesday, wearing a breathtaking India-inspired metallic sari dress and leather boots.

It follows her debut last month on the Victoria's Secret runway, at which she must have impressed considering she was offered a print campaign with the lingerie giant, which she shoots this week.

It's a big coup for the former reality show contestant, who lost to Rhys Uhlich in the 2008 television series Make Me A Supermodel and dropped off the fashion radar.

Her relationship with 40- year-old male supermodel Tyson Beckford has also boosted her profile in the US, and we reckon she'll be getting her coveted "Angel Wings" before long.

Well this whole conversation started with your post asking about her possibly doing an event - something that's typically reserved for mainly contracted models or in a few exceptions models who have built up a bit of work for them: neither one a category that Shanina currently falls in. It's like "Let her at least get a catalog picture published before you jump to hoping she cuts ribbons." It's not 100% impossible for it to happen, but event speculation is going from 0 to 60 for sure.

There's usually so many steps that come before that process. That's what some of us are trying to say.
