Shanina Shaik

yeah, i would love to see her on the runway. So far the only fashion show, I know about her booking is Chanel. Has she done any other fashion shows?

^she has done a fiew shows such as: Abaete, Lorick, Mara Hoffman, Richie Rich, Shipley & Halmos, Trovata, Yeohlee, Betsey Johnson, Catherine Malandrino, Gerlan Jeans, Nary Manivong, Rachel Antonoff, Susan Woo, Bebe, L.A.M.B. And she has done a few in Australia. But nothing major except Chanel as of yet.

'I've done 500 squats in a day'

SHANINA Shaik is the first to admit it takes hard work to get her body catwalk ready. The 20-year-old New York Fashion Week model shares her body secrets with Liz Graham.

In a few days, the who’s who of fashion and modelling will be watching Shanina Shaik as she walks down the catwalk during New York Fashion Week. Chances are they will be impressed with what they see.

The 20-year-old Australian model has already turned heads in the industry. Her fans include Vogue Australia editor Kirstie Clements, who tweeted last month that Shaik is “one of the most beautiful girls I’ve ever seen”, and compared her to supermodels Angie Harmon, Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Shaik was runner-up on Australia’s TV modelling competition Make Me A Supermodel in 2008. Since then, she has moved to New York and has been modelling on the catwalk as well as for magazines and advertising.

Most recently, she became the youth ambassador for Australian underwear label Bonds and walked the
catwalk for Chanel in Paris.

Her biggest job to date, however, has been her appearance at the 2011 Victoria’s Secret show, the lingerie extravaganza which is televised to millions around the world and helped launch Miranda Kerr to international stardom.

Workout secrets

Shaik says to get the Victoria’s Secret gig, she had to become more muscular.

“I’m naturally thin, so I really worked hard to do something different with my body,” she says. “I did Zumba once a week and weights twice a week.”

Her favourite exercise for muscle toning is the squat. “Squats can change your body overnight. You’re toning your legs and bum, but also working your core,” Shaik says. “It’s about technique. You have to go slow.”

Shaik says doing 100 squats a session will produce a difference, but the most she has done in one sitting is 500.

“I did those using weights,” she says. “Every 20 squats, I’d alternate with 10 bicep curls. You could really see the muscle in my legs at the show.”

These days, Shaik still does squats and Zumba on a regular basis but isn’t so hell-bent on muscle tone. When she is not travelling for work, her favourite workout is running along the Hudson River in New York. “Running outside works your body a lot more than on a treadmill,” she says.

Diet and beauty tips

Shaik follows a high-protein, low-carb diet. “I eat a lot of fish, eggs, chicken, vegetables, salad and brown rice,” she says. Breakfast is normally yoghurt and muesli, or an eggwhite omelette with spinach.

“Sometimes it’s hard with travelling to fit in big meals, so I tend to snack throughout the day,” she says. “I also try not to have a late dinner.”

Shaik doesn’t drink soft drinks or coffee and sticks to water and fruit juices. She keeps pasta and ice-cream as “every-now-and-then” indulgences.

She is in an aeroplane at least once a week for work, so there is no avoiding airline food, but she says the secret is to eat the protein and veg in the middle of the plate and avoid the rest.

Her exotic features are due to her Lithuanian, Australian, Pakistani and Saudi Arabian roots, but she says baby oil and a high-quality face moisturiser help keep her skin in great condition.

“Using Johnson’s Baby Oil straight out of the shower is really good,” she says. “It stays in your skin for 24 hours. My boyfriend [US model Tyson Beckford] uses it too, and he looks great.

I also use Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream.”

Shaik keeps her make-up simple and says mascara and lip gloss are essential. “I use Maybelline New York Great Lash, and Laura Mercier’s Stick Gloss looks like a gloss and lipstick at the same time.”

How to do the perfect squat

b+s trainer Damien Kelly says: “Stand with feet shoulder-width apart and raise your arms to shoulder height. Engage your core and bend your knees as though you are about to sit down in a chair, keeping the weight in your heels. Aim to lower your butt to below knee level.”

Shanina forms a strong Bond
MORE than three years after placing second to the rarely-if-ever-seen Rhys Uhlich on Channel 7 failure Make Me A Supermodel, Melbourne-born glamazon Shanina Shaik has established herself as one of Australia’s most in-demand models.

Handpicked by Karl Lagerfeld to walk for Chanel last year, not to mention strutting her stuff and shooting a campaign for Victoria’s Secret lingerie, Shaik has just been picked up by Bonds as a youth ambassador.

In a great start to 2012, the 20-year-old (yep, but she turns 21 this month) is following in the footsteps of Sarah Murdoch and Catherine Mcneil. Confidential got a sneak peak at Shaik’s first shoot for the iconic Aussie underwear brand, wearing the new roll-top briefs and pullover bra, and it’s pretty hot.

Shanina denies she’s too sexy to model fashion
SHANINA Shaik will shrug off claims she’s ‘‘too sexy’’ to succeed in the world of high fashion when she takes to the catwalk at one of the world’s most prestigious events this week.

The 20-year-old stunner said she was determined to silence her critics when she leads a stellar cast of Australian talent to appear at new York Fashion week from Thursday.

‘‘A lot of people doubted I could do high fashion because I look very exotic and think I’m naturally sexy — and with modelling that’s based on commercial work only,’’ she said.

‘‘But at my agency they believe I can swing between the two. It’ll be great to prove those people wrong.’’

Shaik’s stature has grown in the past year since being singled out as our next great modelling hope by the man who kick-started supermodel Miranda Kerr’s career — Next agent Stephen Lee.

And while she said she hoped to replicate Kerr’s success in the States, Shaik — who finished runner-up in Seven reality contest Make me a Supermodel — ultimately hopes to turn her skills to the screen.

‘‘I look up to Miranda Kerr because of her work ethic, she’s a business woman branching out doing herown thing now,’’ she said.

‘‘And Elle Macpherson because they’ve made a long-term business and that’s what I aspire to do.

Wowza! Thanks for all the articles and the gorgeous pictures - image #226 OMG:wub: And the one with the Body and Soul article - when I first saw the thumbnail, I did a double take thinking it was Miranda, more the pose I guess. Anyway News Ltd papers are really talking her up for NYFW - hope it's not just exaggeration and they know something we don't!

Well as she's not yet signed a beauty contract it's refreshing that she can actually tell us what she uses. Now I want to know what she uses for her hair...

Movies?! As cliche as model turned actor is, Shanina looks amazing on film - remember that clip she did which was on vimeo back in her early days with NYM? She would only have been maybe 18 then, and she looked incredible.

The Final Casting Process with Nicole Miller
Nicole Miller is one of the most hands-on designers in the fashion biz— all the way from the initial design process, right down to the model casting. We peeked in on Nicole and her team as they selected the lucky ladies who would walk the runway for her show this Friday at Lincoln Center. Models like Shanina Shaik,Lovisa Ingman, Morgane Warnier, Carolina Thaler and Vanusa Savaris came though the door to show off their best walks, and although we can’t show you her final selection, we can let you in on how Nicole makes her final picks.

Modelinia: What can you tell us about the designs and colors we will see from you this season?

Nicole Miller: My designs this season have a bit of a vintage feel, but updated for the modern woman. Rich plums and deep greens run throughout the collection.

Modelinia: What was your inspiration?

Nicole Miller: My Fall 2012 collection is inspired by the freedom and power I see in popular culture and the youth’s self expression today. The collection evokes the feeling of the parallel times we are living in today.

Modelinia: What are you looking for when casting this year?

Nicole Miller: I am always looking for fresh faces, but I like to use girls I’ve worked with before as well.

Modelinia: When casting models is it more about the look, or the attitude?

Nicole Miller: It’s all about the walk! That always makes it or breaks it for me.

Modelinia: Are there any other factors that you consider important when casting?

Nicole Miller: I have to say, I don’t like it when the girls are too thin. It makes it very difficult to fit the clothes.

Casting Director Diaries: James Scully Refuses to Book Underage Models
Ever wonder how a model goes from being an unknown face to someone like Karlie Kloss or Joan Smalls? Well, it all begins on the catwalk, but before they can even get there, they all must go through countless (and rigorous) meet-and-greets with casting directors. Enter industry veteran James Scully, the man responsible for selecting the lucky ladies who get to sashay down the runway for Jason Wu, Oscar de la Renta, Derek Lam, and Carolina Herrera. In this first installment of our new Casting Director Diaries, Scully gives us a candid peek into how it all works. Watch the video to get a glimpse of the mania, complete with guest appearances by Shanina Shaik and newcomer Amanda Nimmo.

It would be so nice to see her make a splash on the runways this season, seems that James Scully is quite smitten with her already! I'm all for true, classic beauties showing that they can pull off HF and commercial. I think Shanina can definitely do it with that face of hers !

^^ Totally agree! Sweet as ever in that video, and that face is unique and unforgettable.

Looks like she's definitely in for a busy week - Next giving her one of the 8 Samsung phones for the promo (alongside some of their big names) would suggest she'll be walking some major shows - hope that's not just my wishful thinking.
