L'Oreal Fashion Week: Katya Revenko

Designer Katya Revenko's show inaugurates the Studio, a secondary, more intimate runway space adjacent to the main runway room. Technically, her label's called
Desperately Different but I see nothing desperate about her unique style sense. But different? Oh yes.
To the sounds of lapping water and a ringing cell phone (Revenko’s presentation was sponsored by the new
Samsung Cleo handset), models emerge from a cloud of dry ice. They're made up with a
Sharon Tate nude lip and frosted turquoise eyeshadow, with matching tangled, teased Valley of the Dolls hair and the shorter outfits are styled with interesting sheer leggings in flesh-tone mesh, held up by invisible wig tape.
The collection is a series of draped tunics, bubble dresses, one-pieces rompers and playsuits in slinky jersey, paired with boleros and shrugs in layers of nude mesh that flutter from the seams or the shoulders. (Seriously: women haven't worn this much pastel jersey since Cloris Leachman presided over Wonder Woman’s sisters on Paradise Island in the 1970s series.) There are straight leg pants, variations on the jodhpur and fashion’s ubiquitous drop-crotch pant. An elegantly draped tank in semi-sheer grey heather jersey, like many other pieces in the collection, is made of Lyocell jersey, an eco cotton alternative made from wood pulp fiber.
The palette of lavender, concrete grey, golden peach, salmon and a pale aqua (like coolmint toothpaste) conveys the watery vision of Revenko’s collection, but pastel shades of cupcake frosting are difficult to wear. Still, the fact that almost every piece rings in at less than $150 may encourage women to experiment; I’ll start with the silvery blue quilted jacket myself.
