Shibori (a.k.a. tie dye)

Beautiful thread Guis!! Love all the images you collected
We did some shibori in textile colouration but my samples are :yuk:!!! I'd like to maybe take a short course on this to experiment a bit more...
Good luck with your competition prettypouf!!

That reminds me, a couple of months ago one of our teachers sent us information inviting us to to enter designs for the 7th International Shibori Symposium in France.
I just went through my student inbox to get it...
Here's the link:

Submission dates are closed now though, but it was 'open to any student of an art and/or design school, as well as alumni who have graduated within the last 5 years; approximately twenty countries are invited to participate; receiving and jurying processes will be facilitated/coordinated by a designated university from each participating country'.

And for anyone in France who might be interested to check it out please do, and report back to TFS!! It starts at the end of this month!!!!

Tie Dyeing

Hi all,

I've had a quick look and couldn't see another thread on this, but apologies if I missed it.

I really want to have a go at tie dying my own tshirt / vest and then adding some studs or embellishments, but I'm not really sure what different effects there are to be had from tie dying.

Obviously I know of the original 'tie the string round a gathered piece of fabric' method, but I was wondering if anyone had tried any different tying effects?

Also, would cold water dye or machine dye be best?

I'd love to see any home-tie-dyed projects you've done! ^_^

hello^ :meow: I've merged your thread with this
Hope you get some ideas

Either cold or hot dye will work with this technique

Thank you gius! The pictures of your projects you did in class are AMAZING, I'm certainly more inspired now, thanks again! :flower:

you're welcome :)

Hi again,

Thanks for the tips Gius, I just wanted to update you on how the tie-dying went....

There's a little description at my blog (I'm sure you have a gazillion to read, but I thought I'd let you know anyway!) if you want to have a read - www.hilkat.co.uk. Obviously they're nowhere near as good as the pictures you posted, but I'm happy with the results as it was my first go!

Those last pictures you posted - how were the tiny little circle done? Just with thread? They're amazing!

Anyway, thanks again for the tips :flower:
