shoping to me is often terribly agravating and I often end up feeling very wierd, and guilty. Becuas i try to not be a massive consummer as much as i can.

there are very few stores and places I enjoy shoping at.

I hate shopping for clothes too. I constantly read fashion magazines and look at websites for inspiration. Then when I finally do go out shopping I can't find anything I like (and can afford) thats even close to what I want.

I found shopping much more fun when I was younger and not so into fashion. Being a fashion freak on a college budget is hell on earth.

I find that i don't really like the PROCESS of shopping..having to pick and choose and pay...I just like having the item.

I am with you lena, the older I get and the more I get involved in fashion the less I want to shop, I actually feel like a lab rat when I walk into a store, since I have a better idea whats going on behind the scenes. I have reverted to a concept of sustainability ...what do I really need? Why should I shop as a hobby just because others do? Consumerism is at an all time high and I think many people are getting tired of mass consumption and are backing off a bit and going on a diet.

I felt a need to revive this thread...

Lately I've come to really dislike shopping. These are my problems:

- The lack of good shops around here. Everywhere I turn there's the same boring shops, all full of crap, everything looks the same.

- Lack of good vintage shops here. There are very few vintage clothing shops where I live, and because of the vintage craze that's been going on for the past few years, it's almost impossible to find good stuff.

- Snotty salespeople

- The fit. Maybe it's just me, but I have a hard time finding clothes that fit me properly. Jackets and shirts don't fit me around the shoulders, tops are too short, pants are too long and low-waisted, shoes are too big...I think I'm very weird proportioned

- Lack of inspiration. I feel that everywhere I look, people are wearing the same things, even in fashion mags they all look the same. Fashion bores me at the moment.

Therefore, shopping has become a chore for me now...I need an update in my wardrobe, but I just don't want to go shopping. I'm just gonna end up with a lot of crap that I don't really like all that much, but bought because I needed something...

i'm the same, sort of. i love owning a lot of clothes..but eh.
first are the prices. everything i like is out of my price range, usually. i'd be a happy child if they had vintage shops here, which they don't.

second, i hate hate hate shopping for skirts/jeans. i'm 5'2, 90lbs and always i have trouble finding stuff for a short person like me. it always looks wrong, or awkward..or baggy. echkchk

third...i hate how you love the item in the shop, but when you get it, its like blah

I hate shopping- thrift shopping is a totally different story- I do as much of it as I can. I also buy online if I am familiar with the design/sizing and know it will fit well.

I hate trying things on- I rush myself because I hate it- and then I end up all panicky and sweaty. I prob have over 20 pairs of jeans that I bought w/o trying and never got around to returning. I have 1 pair of 10 yo Levis that I wear constantly and wash occasionally


I guess I notice more and more the techniques being used to get me to buy. The store's floor design/layout/lighting/music is many times used to disorient a person so they will take comfort in the one familar thing they know in the environment- the purchase. Whie this has been done for a lond time, the techniques are constantly getting slicker and more effective. An interesting book on this kind of stuff is called Coercion by Douglas Rushkoff. He teaches at NYU's ITP now, but he previously studied cults and their techniques and did consulting for companies based on this research. Kind of freaky, but very eye-openig info.

I absolutely hate grocery shopping, its a nightmare, clothes shopping i dont mind, if i have something in mind and know where to find it, its not a problem, but if i have to trudge down Oxford Street/Regent Street/Bond Street - then thats where the nightmare begins for me. Its usually when i have to buy clothes for my children. The last time i went shopping in the West End for my 10 year old son, it took me 6 hours to find 1 measly coat I wanted a nice dressy coat, could not find anything. In the end i went into Benneton and found a lovely blue duffle coat, it had a button missing, and i got it for 17.00! i was thinking id be spending 150.00, couldnt believe it my feet were really sore, but that made my day

Shopping is frustrating for me because I go into stores with a perfect outfit set in my head. I know exactly what it should be made of, how it should lay, and the detail.

Problem is, I'm a college student and on a budget. Nothing ever looks as good as I picture it, so I end up hanging it back up and walking away.

Lately I've only bought things that I *REALLY* love and that look wonderful on me. When I was younger I would buy it because it semi-fit me and it was trendy. So I went from coming home with bags and bags of clothes, to hardly ever coming out with anything more than a shirt.

I have no problem BUYING things, but I NEVER really find much that I love! And, the things I do love many times just don't look good on me. I am 5'6", 126lbs, but short waisted. So, dresses are hard to fit. It's so frustrating!
Also, I too, am the type who has something pictured in my mind and can never find it. I have been looking for the perfect white silk pants, very flowy, loose. Can't find them anywhere! I ended up having them made for me. I'm also looking for a pale, ice blue chiffon, flowy halter top with a rhinestone detail, again, NADA.
I find that many of the salespeople have NO idea what to suggest for me. I will check out lookbooks and call the NY stores to order items, but I'm either too late to get on the waiting lists or the items looks totally different in person.
I do a lot of vintage shopping and thrift store shopping. I find that most of what I LOVE is just not practical for me to wear.
Of course, when all is said and done, I DO end of finding some great stuff and the thrill of the hunt is a lot of fun!

the worst kind of shopping is for shorts. i dont even wear shorts anymore cause theres never a perfect fit! i guess there's just no such thing...

i think it all depends on who u go with..u cant go by yourself becasue u need a second opinion...u cant go with someone who is really in to shopping and fashion like u are beacuse u will prob fight over the last sive small...and the person cant be totally against buying expensive clothes...

i have found the perfect person to shop with, my good friend tay..she is not really in to fashion but still likes to go out and look though stores with me..she doesnt even try stuff on, unless i make, because i think its good for her...she'll get me a diff size of something if im in the dressing room and dont want to ask someone who works there..but what i like best is she doesnt give a dam if its payless or jimmy choo, shell walk around a store like she owns the place

however i have had terrible experiences shopping with people who cant pick stuff out for themselves that looks good, or they go on about how fat they are, or they take 5 hours in the dressing room..ahh hate those people

You're not alone Lena!

I love fashion, but sometimes I just loathe the mall...what helps me though is I never go alone. I go with a friend, but sometimes even that doesn't help..sometimes I have a insecurity mood swing and feel like I don't wanna be around my friends on the days I feel "ugly"...the best failproof way is to go with my boyfriend. He's not anpother girl that has a body I envy and I know he loves me anyways so doesnt care about my body..plus he gives the best clothes advice/input.

Softgrey I agree with you all the way! I thinkl its so screwed how everthing is up and they are surprised why not as much people buy nowadays...sometimes the world is just so idiotically screwed.

btw, i simply can't shop with the company of others, it's a complete block for me..
when i had my own boutique i couldnt belive the fact that so many girls go shopping in 'groups' its such a turn off.

i think i'll attempt a shopping expedition on Monday and see how it goes..

shopping with others
shopping in most malls here (there is nothing I really want)
when shopping and ending up with nothing I want (so tiring and dissapointing )

I hate trying on but I cannot do without. Reason why I never buy clothes online.

I'm a lone shopper too cause I haven't found the perfect shopping companion yet: the one ready to skip entire sections to stay one hour on a single piece of clothing.

me too~

mine's sort of a different reason though. ever since i was little i hated shopping because i get tired easily. i get cranky when walking around so much. i never used to try things on either so half of the clothes i got always fit me weird. so i'm forced to try everything on now
