I can think of a tremendous number of human fathers that never really become attached to their offspring either. I think it's more a male trait than something particular to a species.
As for animals and emotions in general, how would we know if they feel them or not, or what they feel, or how they process the world around them? It's like alien life on other planets - we can speculate and argue intelligently for either side, for now, because there's no way of knowing for absolute sure.
