I can think of a tremendous number of human fathers that never really become attached to their offspring either. I think it's more a male trait than something particular to a species.

As for animals and emotions in general, how would we know if they feel them or not, or what they feel, or how they process the world around them? It's like alien life on other planets - we can speculate and argue intelligently for either side, for now, because there's no way of knowing for absolute sure.

That is why I said in my post "Most" humans....I think human dads that simply *abandon* their kids (or moms for that matter) just have something defective about them. Really. I do.

As for the rest, we can all agree to disagree. Obviously when mama bears, dogs, cats, whatever....first give birth - while they are still little cubs or pups - the mama is attached. But there comes that time where the cub gets the boot. And they aren't worried about ever seeing them again. Cut and dry.

Imagine a celebrity came to your hometown and had been shooting a movie there for awhile and it was sort of an honor for your town to have such a thing going on and that person does an interview for a big time magazine blasting your town and calling it sh*tty. Would you be pleased with that celebrity?
