I have always loved Lacroix's sketches. Such fantastic exuberance and flair!

Love Donna's although im pretty sure I would hate them if I were told to make the garment exactly the way she drew them:ninja::ninja: I would not be able to decipher them!

I don't think those are the technical sketches that get handed to the sample makers. Those are probably just her finished illustrations of the designs for artistic purposes. There are other sketches that are meant to explain the construction and everything. They're simpler that those are, and are usually only done in marker/pencil. Those Donna Karan illustrations look like they're done in gouache.

And I have to say, after seeing them a few times I LOVE Armani's sketches. The women are kind of what my own sketches look like (though they're obviously much better than mine).

just a curious thought....who does the illustrations for armani>?? or does he do it himself?? surely he must be real busy...but it's his prive line...

I'm wondering...

I see all of these sketches and they're so like spontaneous and colourful and... creatively messy!
And yet people always say that the designs "Have to show how the garment is made ! ! !"
But like Lagerfeld for Chanel and those Donna Karan sketches, you can barely make out the shape of the garment at all, never mind how they are made.
Can someone explain?

Note:
I copied and pasted these from an ebay auction that were selling these for charity; would have killed to have been able to afford them :(

i guess it depends on what the illustration will be used for..
is it for inspiration
or for just describing mood of the collection
for fun
or to show how it will actually look (should be more technical)

i was just at the bookstore and saw that illustration in a book ^
there is also a good explanation of fashion illust in the intro
the book is
Fashion illustration by Fashion designers by Laird Borrelli

Generally, a designer sketch is simply jotting down an idea...a look. It doesn't have to describe every seam and button and dart, etc.

Once it's time to begin constructing the garment, the designer and his/ her team will take the sketch, and make a flat. A flat is a nonobjective look at the garment...basically it shows the garment as if it were laying flat on a table...hence the name...flats. Flats are meant to show every last stitch, seam, piece, dart, etc, front, back and side so that pattern makers can then begin to construct it. Flats are like maps for them.

So, the sketches basically convey the idea, describe each look in the collection, but they usually aren't very technical at all.

Has anyone got Nicolas Ghesquiere for Balenciaga sketches?

All I've seen is his lookbook sketches for Fall 2008 on a bad quality video on youtube!
