Smock Dresses

i love smocks - dont think this trend is over yet. i think they are changing to suit the season, last season it was all grey and black modal/jersey fabrics and knits, this season its a lot of prints and cotton dresses. I picked up the most fab one in the designer/vintage part of Topshop in Dublin last week, i am wearing it with thick tights and chloe silverado shoes and a knit underneath until the weather warms up. Primark, Topshop Zara are still stocking a lot of smock and tunic styles.

^I also just bought one from Forever 21 (albeit a bit more recently). Are these still in style?

I don't get to see too many femmes in my age demographic (18-25) wear dresses. Almost as if dresses are ONLY for formal functions and not for any casual wear. But for the ones who I have seen wore dresses, they look beautiful or even cute. The casual dress has given way to denim skirts of various lengths. Almost as if the casual dress is dead.

Why am I bringing this up? It's because I think it's amazing that the casual, wearable dress really has some life even if the shopping malls and streets think casual dresses are dead. Here is a search result from nextag.com when I did a search for smock dresses:

When I looked up smock dresses online, a lot of my results came in the form of little girls' (literally) dresses. What I've seen about smocked tops is that they seem to really stretch the areas expressed by the smocked garment. Some may even say that in much the same way that gaucho pants/culottes make someone's butt look big, smocked tops make the chest look big. To me, I don't have a problem with smocked dresses. At least any femme looking to wear a casual dress should be open to the option of having dresses like these. These smock dresses are perfectly fine for what I know. Maybe there would be the issue of if the smocked areas are too itchy or something like that. I like these smock dresses. Any kind of casual dresses to offset wearing denim skirts (not that there's anything wrong with them) is cool with me. I'd love to see more dresses worn by femmes to at least show that dresses aren't dead. Unless the casual dress is all played out (at least, around my way).

Well I LIVE in smock dresses, I buy most of my clothes from APC and that's the style they do. I do not care if they are out of fashion, they are comfortable and you look always neatly dressed.

John, there is a difference between smock dresses and smocked dresses. I believe the latter is the one to which you're referring in your post, yes? (Also, smock dresses are more commonly called 'tunics' or 'shift dresses' in America.) I don't find smocked dresses all that attractive (they can look cheap very easily), but I absolutely adore smock dresses. I don't think I'll care if they go out of fashion either, Les Sucettes, I'll wear them forever!

Smock vs. smocked? I tried to find other pictures because all I got from some of the past links were 404 errors. So I had to look the hard way. Then too, I've felt so discombobulated (state of total confusion) trying to understand what's being discussed. Smock garments are still very casual and can be fun as well.

I agree with Virginielle, I love smock dresses can't stand smoked dresses.

i love this trend, specially bc they are an easy way to look formal and comfy, you can put on some nice sandals or dress it up with heels, they are also really easy to make =). on the downside, killer legs or similar, are a must, and also it could be a tricky trend for curvy girls.

I know the waist is back & all...but I'm not willing to part with my Rag & Bone smock dress from last Summer. It's too cute.
