FASHION DESIGNER ANAMIKA KHANNA ON STYLING BOLLYWOOD'S IT GIRL SONAM KAPOOR IN DELHI 6
How did your association with Delhi 6 come about?
Well, they were experimenting with some clothes but it was just not working out. They called me in a state of near panic! They needed clothes in two days flat so my state reached near panic! I sent them some stuff, mostly salwar kurtas that they wanted. Sunita Kapoor (Sonam's mother) made the initial calls and then I started communicating with Bharathi Mehra (director Rakeysh Mehra's wife).
What is Sonam's look in the film?
The look they wanted was made very clear to me. It's a realistic look set in Delhi 6that is basically Chandni Chowk. Sonam plays a middle-class girl-next-door. She is not supposed to be in tank tops and short skirts or Marc Jacobs or Vivienne Westwood or even Anamika Khanna!
Her look is very Indian, mostly simple salwar kurtas. There's lots of colour and vibrancy in the film. Prints dominate the frame. She is also seen wearing silver jewellery, complete desi style. On the whole, it's a pretty look. Her character derives her sense of style like many Indian girls do — from magazines, movies etc. In her personal life she is a happy girl and does her own mix and match. In the film too, she is like that.
Isn't the Anamika Khanna sense of style vastly different from the Chandni Chowk sense of style?
It is different but then again not quite. Of course I understand the ethos of the whole story. We're all Indians. What's the big deal? They had portrayed the look clearly to me and anyway my comfort level with Sonam is very high.
Where did you shop?
We tapped many local sources for the Delhi 6 shopping. We picked up a lot of prints from New Market and also from Delhi's Janpath. The silver jewellery that she wears in the film is also procured locally. In fact, many pieces are from her mom's collection!
Sonam says she will wear anything by Anamika Khanna. She also made her ramp debut with you. What do you think makes you both click?
I think it's because both she and I never force each other's looks on one another. She will never ask me to do something I am not and I will never ask her to dress like someone she is not. Our sense of aesthetics is common.
Sonam's background plays an important role in her style sensibility. Her mother Sunita has great style too and Sonam has grown up seeing a lot of heritage and culture around. Of course, she is a modern girl and that's what balances her. I am able to combine the two aspects of her personality and that's what makes us click.
The good thing is that she is not a nakhra person and is very adjusting. She is more a friend that anything else.
How has she changed in the past two years that you have known her?

I think she is definitely more confident. Over time she knows what she wants.
What are you designing next for Sonam?
What are you designing next for Sonam?
Oh, there's always some production going on for mother or daughter!
Can you see a full-fledged Bollywood career for yourself?
Can you see a full-fledged Bollywood career for yourself?
I'm a fashion person. And that's what I need to do. As far as doing more films goes, it depends on the script.
