CONSERVATIVE '50s swimsuits are back in style and cult American TV show Madmen is behind the resurgence.
The high-waisted bikinis will make a fashion splash on NSW beaches this summer as designers say the demand for vintage-inspired swimwear is soaring.
Proudly showing off the new range are Miss Australia 2011, Scherri-Lee Biggs, 21, Australia's Next Top Model 2010 entrant, Sophie van den Akker, 21 and 23-year-old Channel Nine presenter, Rique Sharman.
Biggs, the brand ambassador for Kooey swimwear, has seen her share of bikinis since winning Miss Australia but said the thick-hip designs are perfect for pool-side glamour.
"These styles are great for being on a boat or doing water sports because nothing's going to fall off," she said.
Now designers including Jets, Zimmermann, Seafolly and Forever New are adding low-cut legs shapes into their usually skimpy collections.
While skinny models are used in advertising campaigns, Scout director for trend forecasting, Tony Bannister, said the vintage cut looks best on women with a '50s figure.
"It's a surprise trend but, with more curves coming through on the catwalk, it's the logical progression. Now real, curvy women have something they can wear to the beach," he said.
