 Proud, proud!

Ok, I'll explain

In 12th century, Italy was made by dozen and dozen of small countries (practically, every town was a state), mainly divided into 2 factions: the Guelphs & the Ghibellines - the Guelphs supported the Pope, and the Ghibellines the Emperor.
In 1176, almost all the towns of Northern Italy allied together, forming the s.c. Northern League (not to be confused with recent political parties...:innocent:) and managed to defeat the Emperor, Frederick I "Barbarossa" (= Red Beard) in the famous Battle of Legnano.
While practically all other towns fighting against the Emperor now have "english-like" flags (that is, a red cross on white field), Como was a ghibelline town, therefore supported the Emperor (and lost ) and our flag is still today the "emperor's flag", a.k.a. "bloody flag", which is "danish-like" (white cross on red field).

^_^ ;)
