I'm writing this on behalf of my friend. She's 5 feet 8 inches, and weighs about 98 lbs. She's stick thin! (no, she does not have an eating disorder) Sometimes it really bothers her, the way she looks in clothes. She's looking at dresses for prom. What kind of details on a dress can create the illusion of curves? I found this dress:

I know on me, I think it would look TOO curvy, but maybe perfect on her? Or maybe not?

Feel free to post pictures to give me an idea, but keep in mind the actual dress she's buying needs to be about $100 or under.

Thanks guys!

I think that your friend should be proud of her shape. Many beautiful and accomplished women over that ages had had a gamine figure. Just off the top of my head; Audrey Hepburn, Keira Knightley, Twiggy, Kate Moss, Irene Cara, Louise Brooks, me (hehe)...In fact, during the 1920s, thin and non-curvy was ideal body type. Fashionable women strove to achieve the lithle, youthful figure, and outfits from that period emphasised the desired shape. In fact, stylish women often wore "breast bands" in order to give themselves the figure that your friend has naturally. I think that your friend should praise her good luck, be proud of her body and dress with confidence! She should search out vintage styles that emphasise, rather than conceal her shape. In fact, mod styles which have been extremely popular of late (just look at Marc Jacob's fall collection) are inspired by thin figures like your friend's! Even the older flapper look was recently seen in the Blumarine collection. Styles like miniskirts, dropped waist-lines and long, straight seams would look fantastic on your friend. These fashions have been created specifically for people like her in mind! Dress to be yourself, not conceal yourself and tell your friend to have tons of fun! :flower:

I've been telling her the exact same thing for years now! But she doesn't see it that way. She thinks she looks sick and gross being really thin. She wishes she could gain about 20 pounds.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep it in mind, and point her towards those styles while we're out shopping.

No problem. I hope you keep encouraging your friend and help make her proud to be herself. Let her know that there are many wonderful women out there who look like her. I know from personal experience that's it's hard to have a thin body type in our society. For all the claims of the impact of stick-thin runway models, most celebrities today have a more curvy figure. Jennifer Lopez, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger (sp?) and Queen Latifah are just a few examples of this trend. While I think that it is positive that these stars are celebrating their body types, people also have to understand that thin people are not necessarily unhealthy. I sometimes wish that I lived in a time where a wider variety of body types were accepted and celebrated...

Lovespell - i can understand your friend. It isn't easy to believe that you are better than you think you are, especially when people tell you. I had a similar hang-up years ago, i never thought i was pretty, but i was complimented everywhere i went, i had lots of male interests, but would find justifications in my mind why i recieved the attention that i was getting. I hated it all, especially when i was at college, being slim and tall, did not help, becaus i wanted to fit in and i just stood out.
As i have matured, i'm happy with my body shape(i still wear a size 12 bottom, 10/12 on top and i know that i am beautiful, especially on the INSIDE.

Tell your friend to love her self/shape, everything, because as she matures her confidence and body will grow and change too

Be careful what she wishes for. I used to complain about my uber skinny-ness. Then I gained 10 lbs. I've never been more uncomfortable in my life. I guess you don't appriciate being so thin until you gain weight, then you feel stupid for complaining in the first place.

She should play of her skinny body and wear WHATEVER SHE WANTS! Thin women can wear anything. B)

she can wear anything she wants!

bias-cut dresses would prolly look great on her -- a light color, satin-like fabrics give an illusion of curves because they're shiny, they show every curve more... she really should have a perfect figure to wear something like that.

So I'm about 5'5" but really skinny. I eat a lot but never seem to gain weight at all. It's almost embarrassing because I get eating disorder comments a lot even though that is soo far from the truth. What kinds of clothes can I wear (especially in spring and summer?) to help fill out my frame and not look too skinny and young? Thanks!

I don't really know because my body type is completley different. But here are some outfits I can think of...

Bermuda shorts, layering tank and a baseball type tee with some Havianas.
A tierred skirt, solid tank and a fitted jean jacket with some cowboy boots.
Loose destroyed denim capris, a Lacoste polo and Keds.

That's all I have for now. I would just suggest to play on the features you like about yourself. Don't worry about being thin, but don't dress in tiny clothing because that only makes you looks smaller. Dress everything up with jewls and bags. Look at Paris and Nicole, they dress great for their size! Hope I helped!

Im in the same boat as you...except im taller. For me I found that jeans with pockets at the side of the pants instead of at the front of the pants can help create some hips even if they really are non-existant lol hope I could help some...

Cowboy boots? Well... i'm not too skinny but i would never wear cowboy boots b/c my thin legs.. It would look very "stick" like... O.o"

I love knee-length skirts making my legs look little wider. I think wearing skirts is way better than pants if u find yourself too slim... A well-chosen skirt makes fine curves also on a boyish body.

Choose layered clothes, tops with shirr, ribbons, anything that shows a stronger figure. If you want i send you an url in private, there you can find shirts i'm talking about and some would fit you for sure. ^_^

Though I'm not 100% sure about small/skinny figure (i'm tall/skinny).. but i hope i could help at least a lil bit.

layers...undershirt, then a shirt, and a sweater, for example...i like to buy those really thin vintage tees and wear them underneath other items of clothing
pants as opposed to shorts
heavier weight fabrics
balanced exposure...so don't wear cap sleeves scoop neck which shows off your skinniest parts (arms and chest, probably) and covers up your thicker parts...along those lines, a tank top can be okay
things should fit well...not baggy, but not skintight either

those are just random things that have worked for me. i used to get those anorexic comments, too, but fortunately i don't anymore.

I'd suggest fuller skirts, A-line, tulip, etc.... tops with some sort of detailing or... short one button blazers...

go to star style and look up Nicole Ritchie's thread, or actually just about any starlet

The boyish figure thread - no curves - how to dress?

ok, i did a search but a thread like this didnt come up. if there is one like this im v. sorry :flower:

im a uk size 4/6 and im looking for a summery day dress. does anyone have any recommendations of styles/cuts that would compliment my body shape. thanks :flower:

slim?...
like...no hips and no boobs?...

...
can you be more specific...?
slim is not really a body 'shape'...it's really a 'size'...

UK 4-6???? I don't even know any shops that stock UK4..... unless you're in Jane Norman.... let's not even go there....
If you are a 4-6, depending on your height, pretty much most things will suit you..... advantages of being so slim (is slim the right word? by my books UK4-6 is kinda skinny...I don't mean that offensively!).
Unless you're really short in which case, don't buy long things that will swamp your body.

And yeah, Soft's right? Boobs? Hips? Those things you need to take into account....
