The Brunette Hair Thread

beduina: I go to get my hair done by a Japanese hairdresser a J.Moriyama hair salon at Marylebone. They're SUPERB and really value for money. I went from a very light brown to a chocolatey warm brown and that went awesome - my hair's texture was still very much intact even after the colouring session.

Love the change Kae!! I can see your face already brightnening up with the highlights!:crush: They do look a bit reddish at the moment but with the toner they'll be just fine. Can't wait til you officially move to the blonde thread again! :D but, take your time! I don't want you to fry your lovely head! (that sounded a bit creepy..you know what I mean! love ya!)

lol Mel, you're so cute! i love it lighter just because makeup is so much easier. not that i really wear a different amount but i can just get away with lighter colors and if my makeup fades, i don't worry about looking like death or something.

i hope the toner works. honestly if it doesn't i don't really know where to go from here. i don't want to keep going if i'm only going to get reddish results or have this reddish base highlight that will take foreverrrr to cancel out. we shall see tomorrow!

Sounds good! where about in Marylebone is?

got more Ash toner, a subtle change that i couldn't really get to show in photos but in person it's a bit more muted. my hairdresser and i figured out a game plan, second session: more highlights and going over all the existing highlights to get it the way i want. third session: possibly start lightening my base color as well :D

last time i got pretty blonde with three sessions of highlights. four was really good because i found my current hairdresser to do the third and fourth who got me ashy enough. my previous hairdresser overdid the gold to we had to cancel it out. but i wanted perfection, no highlight lines on top and no brown pieces on the bottom section of hair. i don't think i'll be as picky this time  and just go with a beachier look :angel:B)

fashionfied i have the same thing - its such a dark shade of brown, it looks black :S

Not sure if i like that on myself.. i had my hair colored for so many years, now i miss it.
im thinking of getting it dyed - chestnut brown baby!

any tips on how to remove brassiness from hair a month after the last color? my hair is brown with highlights...the highlights are turning red...should i just buy a glaze? im super busy and have no time to get it colored again!

Has anyone tried going ash blonde? I'm thinking of taking the plunge, but I wonder if I can keep up with the change / maintain it.

Chicandcool, I've yet to find someone in New york who can do it, it always ends up brassy...and then they blame your hair color saying it cant be ashy...but when i was in europe a few years ago it was the perfect ash blonde and my hair wasnt damaged or anything! good luck and tell us how it goes....maintainence is easy you just have to use a glaze or toner over 6 weeks or something..am i right?

chicandcool, i have gone Ash Blonde before.

how long it takes? it really depends on both your hairdresser and your hair. last time i think it was like 10 months or something like that. for a number of reasons: i changed hairdressers(i didn't trust my former hd with color), they want to not bleach too much too fast especially if you are starting with dark hair, and you gotta monitor how your hair is taking the bleach etc. this time it will take me 3 months because my hairdresser already knows my hair can handle the bleach. and then you also have to consider if you look good with blonde and what shade/tone fits you best. if you transition slowly you can make changes without being in shock from the major change.

maintenance is mainly once a month / every 4 weeks root touch-up. blonde shampoo(keeps color pure), purple shampoo(keeps color from going brassy, nice & ashy), hair masques (replenish moisture) etc.

you should visit the Blonde Hair Thread :flower: from that page, you can go backwards and see my hair. i'm actually transitioning back to Ash Blonde right now but not as light. this time i'm going for a Dark Ash Blonde so i've got a new post in the Blonde thread too ^_^

UNiQFashionista and kissablekae, thanks so much for all the tips! Karma!

I think I'm going to go for it. I'll post pics if I'm not too lazy. :P

UNiQFashionista, i don't know much about DIY glazes/toners, i would definitely ask the people ask the beauty supply store for advice. :flower:

i think some hairdressers are just scared to work with certain hair types and texture : Asian or Indian hair, or anyone with dark+thick+coarse / wavy-needs-to-straighten-daily combo.

i remember an Indian girl being turned away for blonde highlights because they said it would only turn out orange for her so she settled with brown. i have seen Indian girls with blonde highlights, their hair texture was probably not as thick or coarse at the girl that was at the salon. i don't know the girl's hair history either, she could have dyed her hair black many times and now expecting them to bleach through it all.

speaking generally : even if one turns you down, its not bad to look elsewhere. some hairdressers just aren't experienced with dealing with different hair types. if they don't trust themselves then you shouldn't trust them either! definitely would not want to be their 'test bunny'. sometimes certain hair types should stay away from blonde for the health of their hair. even if their hair does get to the color they want, will it feel nice or look healthy?

chicandcool, good luck! can't wait to see. how light are you going? are you going Gaga?

^ you have gorgeous hair! :D

and i agree with you, sometimes when you dyed your hair black, especially with henna, you could never get rid of the colour. and i agree with the feel nice or look healthy. i used to dye my hair a lot, from pink, purple, brown, platinum blonde, you name it. and god, my hair was horrible. it took me years to grow it back from the start and stay with my original colour. now, that it's in the original colour again, it look so much healthier, and finally grow back to it's original volume. so i think i'll stick with it for a long while.. the efforts that it took to change colour, maintain it, and to care for it was just too much for me =/

loonaka: thanks :D

farou7a: i bet it'll look gorgeous! post pictures when you do get it :D

fashionified, thank you! ^_^

i've dyed my hair black before too. afterwards, i was like what. have. i. done...it washes me out. some people liked it but i think they like the idea of it and the hair itself. luckily the black hair color wasn't too stubborn. the dark brown dye they used on me at the salon is good sh*t, it stays really well...which also meant it was hard to lift at first.

some my friends want major changes but i tell them they shouldn't because would be a lot of work for them upkeep wise. i consider myself low maintenance when it comes to hair but i'm never lazy with color.

so are you planning to grow it out like Devon Aoki's? you've got the fullness down already ^_^
