New Hellcats Dance Drama with Robbie Jones
by Troy Rogers
![]()
After receiving a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite New TV Drama, Hellcats is all about conflict on November 10 at 8pm, as actor Robbie Jones finds his character, Lewis, caught in the middle of Marti's (Aly Michalka) feelings for him and Dan (Matt Barr).
However, the week after on November 17, Hellcats welcomes veteran Fame actress and dance choreographer Debbie Allen to the Hellcats set to direct the episode, "Pledging My Love", which sees Robbie Lewis throw down a number of Michael Jackson type moves.
With Hellcats in full season swing on The CW, TheDeadbolt caught up with Robbie Jones for an exclusive chat about the reception of Hellcats, working with Debbie Allen, the magic of Michael Jackson, and what Hellcats fans can expect from Marti and Lewis.
THE DEADBOLT: How do you feel about how well the show has been received?
JONES: I’m really proud of it. I’m really excited and it’s a true blessing. The Lord is blessing us out here. We got the back nine and a full season pick-up and it’s just a dream.
First of all, audition for a show and get the role? Not only get the role, but actually shoot a pilot that gets picked up! Then on top of that the pilot and the show is received well and you get a full season, we’re just jumping through these miraculous hoops one week at a time. It’s just really a blessing.
THE DEADBOLT: What has it been like to work with Debbie Allen?
JONES: Oh boy, how long have you got? She’s amazing with a huge capital "A". She changed the game for us out here. She came out here and upped the level ten notches. It’s a performance, acting, dancing type of show, just like her wheelhouse is, and she really just changed it for us. Everybody loves her.
From the top, all the way to the bottom, the crew and cast, everybody has been expressing a desire to have her back. We’d love to have her as a more permanent part of the show. She’s just fantastic. I could go on and on
THE DEADBOLT: Were you familiar with her before? Did you watch a lot of Fame?
JONES: Oh, of course. She’s just a great person. Especially for people who are in the dance community and people in the film community. She put together one of my favorite movies, Amistad. The stuff she’s worked on in the past, I was always a fan of hers. I was a big fan of her sister also. I was a huge Cosby Show fan and I love Phylicia Rashad. Before [Debbie Allen] left the set, I made her call her so I could talk to her. I just gushed over her telling her how much I love her.
THE DEADBOLT: So what were you guys doing with the Michael Jackson song?
JONES: The Michael Jackson song for Debbie's episode?
THE DEADBOLT: Yes.
JONES: It's just a routine that basically encompasses a lot of Michael Jackson moves and stuff like that. It was so much fun because I'm a huge Michael Jackson fan and we got a chance to do a Michael Jackson-like routine, with Michael Jackson type clothes. It was a great time for everybody.
THE DEADBOLT: Well, since you're a young guy, what does his music mean to you?
JONES: [laughs] Growing up I wanted to not be like Michael Jackson, I wanted to BE him. I wanted to have the curl. I wanted to have the high water pants, white socks, and all of that. His music was kind of like the soundtrack of my young life. It was playing a lot in my house and my friends loved Michael Jackson. So he's the greatest to ever do it, easily hands down. I love him.
THE DEADBOLT: Can you talk about how the drama will evolve between Lewis and Marti?
JONES: Yeah. I can definitely see some waves in their ocean. [laughs] I don't think it's going to be smooth sailing for them and I think her relationship with Dan is something that - I just saw last week, it's an issue and something that's going to play a part in both of their relationships respectively. So I think we'll see how it's going to play out. I'm a Marti and Lewis fan. I like them together. So we'll see how long they can make it last. I hope it lasts.
THE DEADBOLT: What's it like having the influence of both Aly and Ashley on set? How is the dynamic different between the two
JONES: Well, they have two different personalities altogether. I mean, they're both great in their separate rights, but they're definitely two different people. I love them both.
Ashley is kind of like a firecracker, a bubbly personality, and she's like everybody's best friend. Aly is really focused and determined and really centered on the project. Everybody is, but she's just really one of those people where you look at her and go, "Okay, she's on it. She's on it!"
It's great to be on a show to have that determination and focus because she has a lot on her plate. She has to have the dance routines down and she's in almost every scene and doesn't have the luxury of time. So she has to stay on it and it's great to see that from both of them to make everything run smooth.
THE DEADBOLT: How does it feel to be another CW show after One Tree Hill?
JONES: It feels like I'm back at home. Honestly, it feels great. I really love this network and the demographic that they have. The fans of The CW shows are fantastic. I know the One Tree Hill fans were really great to me and the Hellcats fans have been nothing but wonderful. I'm really loving it and it's a great place to be. I feel like I'm at home.
