The Face Thread, the Q's and A's about Foundations, Primers, Powders...

Ok, I hope someone can help me with this.

I have oily, acne-prone skin. What should I use to soften it before I apply makeup - something that could "hide" blemishes without clogging, and also something that can even my skin tone?

Hi!

I picked up one of those colour correcting palettes from Adrian Arpel (Not sure if Adrian Arpel is just a Canadian label) - basically it is 4 different colour creams:

yellow: eliminates undereye bags
green: eliminates redness (including the redness of pimples)
pink: evens skintone
and then there is a concealer colour for concealing blemishes

If you use the right amount, I find this compact (and other one's I've tried) to be very effective - especially if I need to look a lot more awake and than I actually am... :innocent: :p

Clinique has some good products for acne-prone skin, and it's not as thick as Mac's stuff. Sometimes if I need to cover blemishes, I put some eye shadow (yes, that's right) that's a bit darker than my skin colour on the blemishes, and then on top of that put on foundation, and it covers it right up, and makes it all soft looking. I'm serious. I don't know how good or bad that is for my skin, but it works. And, Concealer makes my skin break out more and it looks very blotchy on me, so I avoid it at all costs now.

Where can you get Adrian Arpel products, fezbatik? Shopper's?

Has anyone used Queen Helene's Mint Julep Masque?? And does anyone know where I could buy it in Canada?

Sonia - I get mine at the Bay - if they don't have counters at every GTA Bay, they definately have one in Oakville.

i have another question - i never really liked to used foundation, but i have to cover my pimples..so can I use just concealer on my face without foundation, or do i have to use both?? and can i use foundation just on the pimple?

Thanks fezbatik and Sonia. :flower: I've used green eye shadow on my dark circles and it worked, but I still prefer concealer. I bought Lancôme Adaptîve for oily skin and it's working. I use a light green concealer from Pupa on my dark circles and on the pimples and although it's a bit too light it has a good coverage. There's a brand in my country called Dermatus that carries a concealer palette in the colours you mentioned, fezbatik. I think I'll give it a try.

If you don´t like foundation, you can use just concealers to cover up the pimples. Use ir with a small concealer brush and pat with your finger so it doesn´t call the attention to the pimples istead of concealing them. ;)

Use a shade that is your skin colour or one a bit lighter to tone down the darkness or redness of the pimples.
Stila does some wonderful concealers and so do Bobbi Brown and Mac. :)

Don´t forget to use a bit of loose powder in the end, all over your face to fix the concealer and to tone down the shine.

Nemova, maybe try a yellow hued cream for the dark circles - the green is best used to couteract redness, and the yellow hue will counteract the shadows - just blend well. :flower:

Smashbox green, yellow, and purple color correcting primer

Has anyone tried this stuff? or any stuff like it? I am very curious if it works and if it is light or heavy...

You can find it at Sephora.

Hotspot: That's what Nemova and I were discussing - I use a colour palette by Adrian Arpel, and I find using the colours to couteract things like redness (the green), dark circles (the yellow) and to even out my skin (the pink/purple)- I get much better results than with a concealer...luckily I rarely get pimples though, so this works best for me. I say try the smashbox and let me know what you think about it...maybe i'll switch over.

BTW, the adrian arpel palette is pretty light, goes on creamy and finishes more like a powder... not very moisturizing though.

everytime i use loose powder after concealer, it looks really cakey, what should i do?

Use a powder puff with just a bit of powder and apply doing a light pressure. Then just brush off the excess with a face brush (or just one that you don´t use for blush).
It either could be the way you apply the powder, or the colour of the powder. Transparent powders are the best.

VersaceGirl - you might also try holding one-ply of tissue over the concealed area, and brushing the powder over it. It really diffuses the powder on your face. (works to set the concealer much better IMO, without caking).

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a foundation and concealer for dry and sensitive skin?
My skin is a bit uneven, and I get a lot of tiny red spots and breakouts that I want to cover up. But concealers seem to go all dry and cakey, and foundations are always too dry and feels too heavy on my skin. I have tried both expensive and low-priced ones, but nothing seems to fit.

I had the same prob like u. But you need to take care of ur dry
skin before you think abt applying make up. A good mosterizer for
the day & night. There are many recomendations in the skin and
haircare section =)

A concelar that worked for me was MAC and foundation from NARS :flower:

I have the same EXACT problem, my skin is full of blemishs under the skin and red spots all over...still cant find the right foundation that would give me a Clear skin look

I've been using Lancôme Adaptîve liquid foundation and I have great results. It evens and smoothes the skin and isn't cakey at all. It's a bit pricey, though.

I need help-

I'm clueless about makeup-I have semi dry skin, with few blemishes, and my skin tone is pertty even. Do I use powder or foundation? I'm afraid to use powder because there are so many girls at my school that walk around looking cakey  . But with foundation I'm afraid to use it because it never looks natural. Which one should I use and which brands should I consider. I want the stuff that will make my face appear "natural" and smooth without looking like I have make up on. I was going to buy Revlon foundation but I decided it would be better to ask before I droped $10 for a tiny bottle of make up!

Alfie - my best advice to you is to try a tinted moisturizer. It sounds like you are relatively young, so there should be no reason to cover your glow with heavy foundations...it should just even you out completely, and help with the small amount of dryness.

I used to use Benefit's "I am Rebel" - b/c the colouring was perfect with my olivish skin tone...but I'm sure you could find many others...:flower:
