its a new trend in japan among the young girls. they get real dark fake tans, bleach their hair, and wear bright makeup.

think of lil kim circa 1999.

like harajuko girls, the ganguro movement is wildly popular all over japan.

It's not really a new trend...it's been going on for a good few years now. :D

really? wow. i guess ur right.

they all look freaky to me. i dont think it looks attractive at all.

this trend is totally dead in japan and has been for about 5 years now.
but eventually it even caught on in america, albeit a bit modified.... remember the attack of the orange starlets?

It's not a trend anymore.... It was a trend ya like a few years ago.....Not many people dress like that in Japan now..If they do, they get sniggered at

They remind me of those really fake over the top Californian girls with fake bright orange tans....

Mystic Tan Addiction...I hav a girl at school like that...and she uses white eye makeup too so I always laugh thinking of the Ganguros

Ganguro Girls would make a cute (scary?) costume though. Course none of my friends will get it

When I was in Japan about 5 years ago, I called these girls the "Powdered Sugar Girls" because looked like they had powdered sugar around their eyes and lips. They were also pretty much the only girls I saw wearing shorts (all the other girls were mostly wearing skirts and pants).

Take it easy guys...this young lady is pretty new to the forum and PM'd me this morning to let me know how nice and helpful everyone on this forum is. It's very important to remember that a lot of people don't know as much as the rest of us and we need to help them along.

they've been around for a while ... I think there was even a Benetton campaign which portrayed them!

The whole "ganguro" thing is -or was- OK for a minority of young japanese girls ... apparently you can not be a woman and still eb ganguro ... tho I saw this documentary about one that kept being ganguro after getting married and having a baby .... apparently the whole idea behind the ganguro thing is to look black (hence .. the white makep on the lips and the darkened skin color) .. tho its an interpretation in the unique wacky japanese way ...

Most of the people I know who's seen them agree that they're scary ... I just think they're OK -tho tacky imho-

PS ... hey .. new girl! Welcome to tFS!

I also thort this trend was dying out, but who knows trends kind of go in cycles. And anyways even if its not a popular trend atm it was at one point.

These ganguro girls reminds me of a doll with their over the top make up.
This is the one japanese trend i never have and never will like. But each to their own. I respecet those people as it must actually take gutts to go out looking like that ... i couldnt do it.
