Just in case someone was also in love with Cate's wardrobe in the movie, there was an entire article about it on The Guardian yesterday. It's as good as it looks (all sweaters by Margaret Howell and all that.. unsure why the costume designer felt like adding a Rolex and a Birkin, so tacky and didn't even notice them, but the rest is ✨✨)

I think they make sense for the character as status symbols (not that it's warranted, but they are kind of the archetypical male/female "you've made it" pieces). Maybe Linda Tarr from Statan Island is more susceptible to all that than Lydia Tár. Come to think of it, in real life Lydia Tár would probably a spokesperson for Rolex, like Gustavo Dudamel.

Mission: Impossible (the first one), I was in the mood for an old-school 90s popcorn action movie last night. Still can't believe Tom Cruise did so many of those stunts, some of them had me wondering how the man is even alive.

I still can't see the Rolex, she's all Hermès watch and no bag in my eyes.

I saw Women Talking cause.. fell for the hype.. and it was as bad as My Life Without Me. Something about Sarah's approach always feels so self-centered and.. arrogant. I feel like the actors, as good as they are, really struggled to make the dialogues believable and.. it still feels like an audio-less shot of some mennonites talking about something serious, dubbed by post-2016 American activists that are in love with the cause but mostly in love with the sound of their voice talking about it.

The odd thing is, I can't remember her carrying a handbag at all, and I feel like I would have noticed if it was something conspicuous. Maybe her assistant picked it out on her behalf and carried it around for her? lol I feel kind of goofy getting into the weeds on this, but it was maybe the only movie that came out last year that really interested me to the extent I'd give a hoot about this level of detail - at least sartorially speaking. Concerning the watch, I suppose I have to toss my lil spokesperson theory aside, since her watch is vintage. Whatever is the most accurate would probably be what she'd choose. "Time is the whole thing" or whatever it is she says. I'm so not a watch person at all, but I just googled and some watch website I found ranked the Rolex Datejust 41 as their #1 most accurate watch, while noting Rolex overall is meticulous across the board with exactness. Is that real or just a sponsored article? lol. Her watch isn't a Datejust 41, it's a men's bubbleback, which apparently Rolex stopped producing some time in the 1950s. I like it, I hate metal watch bands and hers is brown leather. And she wears it with the watch face on the inside of her wrist, so clearly they put thought into it from a costume design and performance perspective. Funny how there are actual articles about all this.

Not surprised there's a whole section on this somewhere on the internet. I'll be honest, I appreciate a good watch, mostly women's watches, but I draw a line at straight dudes talking about watches like it was the overnight **** extension they've been asking for. There, said it without a filter. And because they do this often [mostly those hitting or about to hit the midlife crisis], as soon as I hear some 'tHiS 1603 mOsAiC bLuE dIaL', my brain shuts down. Just let me know if it's cute and not some gaudy thing that could be on El Chapo's wrist and call it a day.

I'm honestly glad it's generating debate since apparently it flopped financially, but I do think some are overanalyzing some parts, like trying to decode the ending? what is there to decode? it's the demise of someone who was at the very top and falls to a place lower than rock bottom professionally and certainly unimaginable place in terms of pride, she's now the backdrop of some anime convention screening thing and conducting for the one audience that couldn't ever cancel her because.. barely functional past their comics. It's mostly a parody on how you can find yourself cancelled in the blink of an eye, like seeing the way Harvey Weinstein lives now in comparison to how he used to live.

Pretty in Pink...... I still can't get over the final pink dress (and what had to be done to a lovely vintage dress to make THAT ) .

Other than that the clothes were fantastic though, I watched Risky Business (1986) right before that and it's interesting to see how much the styles changed in just what, three years between the two films? Even allowing for the differences between characters' styles etc.

Like when I went to an 11 pm showing of M3GAN and there were several kids under 6 running up and down the stairs the whole time, plus a baby crying... oh and the gaggle of white girls who got in an argument with a group of black girls from another theater because they supposedly (probably) used the n-word at them. The trash element was strong that night

The Birkin is supposed to be understood as a gift from the woman she meets after her talk in NY with Gopnik, after they spend the night together... this is the only part of the movie that makes no sense to me because WHO would give a Hermès bag to a one-night stand??
Also the costumer designer said this in another interview with W:

"Then there’s the scene with the Birkin. Did Todd confirm in the script that he wanted that particular style?

It was written as an Hermès bag. Cate and I both talked with Todd several times about the Hermes, saying that a Louis Vuitton might be better. But he insisted that this woman would wear a Birkin and we had to get one. You don’t really see it very much, but somehow, everybody knows it’s a Birkin."

As for the watch, I'm surprised to read it's a Rolex, looked more like Cartier to me or sth in that style.

^ Ah, I swear I only see that red bag on the arm of that woman (never on Cate) but it makes sense now that you say she gifts something super valuable and hard to get to her. This is at the beginning so it's more to build an image on what type of powerful position Lydia has. You know, the kind that will make others go to extraordinary lengths just to be acknowledged or force some kind of connection with them.

Definitely a more controversial area of the MeToo conversation that most won’t go into because it's a part of the dynamic of abuse and easily used to blame the victim, who, to this day, is still expected to comply with some ingénue script in order to be taken seriously when.. it’s possible to be greedy, cruel, vulgar, too 'persuasive', unpleasant and/or dumb enough to give someone famous the keys of your new car in hopes that they date you lol, and that still does not warrant professional sabotage, coercion, assault, r*pe and other unlawful conduct, but the fact that you did initiate a doomed and not so typical transaction is what fuels the delusion in people with a position of power that they can then do whatever they want and later split the responsibility or make it your problem (like Tár's former lover who commits suicide).

"Titanic" at the theaters, for the umpteenth time. I saw it multiple times when it was originally released, then once again when it was re-released a few years ago, and now again. There were all but 5 people in the theater, and we pretty much spent the whole time quoting the lines. I felt as though I found my tribe.

I also saw Titanic yesterday, first time in theaters and I had only seen it once before on a VHS tape on my parents' small tv... What an experience! And yes, every line in this movie is iconic.

Straw Dogs. Ob. Sessed. Susan George was outstanding. The title of the film. The psychological nuances of it all. Bravo.

And finally buckled down and watched The Scary of Sixty-First. Welp. It is a completed film lol. But as annoying as parts of it were, it rele was not as bad as I thought it would be. Actually did a good job making me feel unsettled as I have had an untreated schizophrenic roommate before but poor Dasha. She wants to be so dainty and frail running around for help but just looks goofy as hell. Had a few good laughs with her use of "f*ggot" as well as the Anna cameo. Also great score!

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Technically a rewatch, but it never fails to make me laugh, I giggle every time John Cleese says "k-nigh-t!"

I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn’t fall back asleep, so I watched some TV, and settled on “Silence Of The Lambs”, at, like, 4am, on a work-night.

The Witches (1990). Loved it, Anjelica Huston was on top form as the Grand High Witch and the talking mice are adorable, but goodness is it very of its time (grandma smokes cigars indoors around her grandson). I did enjoy the late 80s fashions too.

Finally saw Everything Everywhere All at Once. In love with Ke Huy Quan he was so sweet in that movie I'm bout to cry. Also I could not believe my EYES that they actually wrote that vagina hand trick into the script ewlkjrnfkjerdln I haven't felt that strong of a mixed feeling of shock and hilarity from a film in so long.
