The Ralph Lauren Team USA uniforms 'Made in China' scandal

^ The Olympics are extremely political, despite how they want to appear.

Completely agree. In fact certain Olympic moments have been completely imbued with politics. I would mention some of them but I think it could be against TFS rules. I think, even though we didn't wish this wasn't so, that the Olympics sometimes become the embodiment of what's going on in the world at that moment. But instead of wars and fighting it's seen through athleticism.

But anyways, I think that part of the reason so many people are upset with RL is because when you send athletes to compete in the Olympics you want them to be proper representatives of your nation, and they might not be seen this way if they aren't wearing clothes that were manufactured in their own country. It's a sense of patriotism really. It's not just about how they appear when it's time to compete but outside of the arena as well.

I wonder though, how many other nations have uniforms made elsewhere, yet no one is mentioning it. Or maybe it's just that some people in the US made it into a big deal, whereas in other countries it might not be seen as an issue really.

It's not a big deal for other countries because RL is an American brand. Other countries without a big name sportswear design house - it's not an issue for them if they wore RL, or any other brand.

soooo the opening ceremony starts soon, are they not going to wear these uniforms after all??

They sure did and people shouldn't be upset they were made in China, they should be upset that a lot of people commented that they looked like the French team lol

Haha... yep Mimo... everyone at our party seemed to think that they looked like the French team! I think it's the hats that did it. At least no one could really mistake them for anything but the US because of the large size of the team! I know this may sound a bit terrible but I kinda hope that because of this fiasco RL won't be permitted to make the uniforms for the next Olympic games and another designer will be selected. This way maybe it'll be someone who actually has fresh ideas and wont create terrible outfits for the team.

Although I don't agree with the uniforms being made in China, watching the ceremony last night I thought the U.S. team looked really sharp! I thought it was one of the best uniforms there. It was a bit flight attendant looking, but I saw quite a few that would fit into that category.
