The Row S/S 2023 Paris

I love the presentation, theres some good ready to wear and workwear pieces too

^^^The presentation is very Liz's Bazaar mid-90s, shot by Demarchelier. Almost brings a tear to my eye...

This label feels and looks more like a goldmine of a boutique where the owners have curated a collection season after season filled to the brim with the most accessible, wearable and timeless designs from vintage Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Helmut Lang, Yohji Yamamoto, Ann Demeulemeester, Prada, etc etc than an actual design label. And I mean that in a good, but cynical way. It’s one-stop shopping for the customer who doesn’t have the time to shop but all teh money in the world.

(And always thought of their menswear as an option for their womenswear clientele to shop for their boyfriends/husbands, rather than a label for a certain discerning man. Most of these looks and separates are straight out of The Gap early-90s staples, and can now be had easily and affordably at COS. But they know their customers well enough to offer a basic sweater for $2500. More power to them, frankly.)

VERY Yohji this time around.

No complaints from me. I love it.

My only negative is the menswear which feels/looks a little bit too much like Balenciaga. I can't stand a broad, padded shoulder.

I find the presentation super distractive. they have done much better in the past and if all feels very generic to me apart from a couple of looks.

As previously said, it looks like a compilation of the greatest hits by Lange, Yamamoto, Sander and others, but straight from the archives, not refreshed. Some might prefer it like that, but it's rather dated for my tastes. I stumbled on the shooting in Paris, in a posh old-money neighborhood, a couple of weeks ago; I am definitely not convinced Paris suits this collection, it certainly doesn't feel Paris, maybe they should have stick to Mayfair.

^^^ Interesting. Do share! Was it a casual shoot with just a few people?

At best, the production looks very Scott Schuman street photography quality. But the styling, and in particular the shot with the sole male model, instantly makes me nostalgic for Demarchelier’s on-location shoots with a group of models . (...And I’d like to imagine the female model is Stella.)

Extremely low-key shooting, street-style, around 3/4 models, 10 fitters MUAs and haidressers. Very cataloguesque.
